We build digital products that millions of people use every day. Our motto is Shape, Ship, Scale; we work out what to build, ship it and help it grow. Now we’re looking for a product engineer in Gothenburg who has Shape, Ship, Scale in their DNA. We are a small team at Umain in Gothenburg, and we share an office with around 40 colleagues from across Eidra. So it’s a close team with a much bigger room behind it. The work You will shape, build and ship digital products for Swedish and international clients. This means that you will be responsible of working on projects of significant scale: 400M+ total app downloads 50M+ monthly active users Backends handling tens of thousands of requests per second Most of our work is in Kotlin, Go, and TypeScript, and we pick the tool that fits the project rather than forcing one stack onto everything. The Role A product engineer at Umain thrives at the intersection between product management and software engineering. You work close to clients and stakeholders, help figure out what’s worth building and then build it. Often that means taking a rough idea, a new feature of a whole new app, and turning it into a working proof of concept fast enough that people can react to something real instead of a slide. The good PoC’s don’t get thrown away. You build them so they can be extended into proper products, and you help carry them there together with product, design, backend, mobile and QA. How we build We start from the customer's need, not the solution: who the users are, what they’re trying to do, and the smallest thing we can build to learn whether we’re right. That becomes a clear spec, and the spec is the source of truth. We break the work into tasks agents can complete, run them in parallel, verify the output with tests, evals and review, and ship. Then we put it in front of real people and decide together what to cut, what to keep, and what to harden. Agents do much of the implementation. You own the problem framing, the spec, the orchestration and the quality of the result. What you’ll do Shape * Run discovery with clients and help them separate what they need from what they asked for. * Frame the problem from actors to use cases to features, and turn it into specs that both people and agents can build against. * Decide what to build first, and explain why to technical and non-technical people alike. Ship * Turn ideas into working proofs of concept in days, using agents and choosing the right model and tool for the job. * Be deliberate about what to fake in a prototype and what must be solid from day one. Scale * Evolve successful PoCs into production products across the stack, rather than starting over. * Build in the tests, guardrails and observability that keep agent-built systems trustworthy as they grow. * Share what works with the team, and help build product thinking and agentic practice into how we deliver. What we’re looking for * 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a track record of shipping products to real users. * Solid full stack skills, and happy to pick up new languages when the project calls for it. * Strong requirement and problem-framing skills: you can work from actors to use cases to features with clear acceptance criteria. * Hands-on experience delivering production software with coding agents (for example Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or similar), beyond autocomplete. * A working spec-driven practice. You can show specs you’ve written and what got built from them. * Experience building prototypes or MVPs and taking at least one of them into production. * Strong engineering judgement. You review agent output critically, make tradeoffs out loud, and own the result as your own code. * Comfort with ambiguity, and the consulting instinct to work it through with clients. * Curiosity about the business you’re building for, and about tools that change month to month. Nice to have * Product management, UX or service design experience alongside engineering. * Building AI features into client products: tool calling, RAG, MCP servers or multi-agent workflows. * Running multiple agents in parallel, and practical experience with both frontier and open-weight models. * Mobile development experience (iOS, Android or cross-platform). * Experience in a consultancy, agency or early-stage startup. In consulting the next project rarely looks like the last one. If that sounds like a feature rather than a risk, you’ll fit in well. How we work * Equal pay and clear progression. Our career framework sets transparent levels, so pay and growth track what you do, not how well you negotiate. You build your development plan together with your coach. * Everyone gets a coach, for both professional and personal development. * Flexibility that respects your life. Gothenburg is our default office and we work from home when it makes sense. We hire people across different ages and life stages, and we treat family, health and life outside work as normal, not as something to manage around. * Small multidisciplinary teams, genuinely interesting clients, and a real bar for quality. How we interview No algorithm puzzles. The technical part of the process is a conversation at a whiteboard: we give you a realistic product scenario, and you take it from idea to a system that could actually ship, talking us through your choices as you go. We’re interested in how you think and navigate a problem, not in a finished design. Practical Umain conducts a background check for final candidates in accordance with our internal policies. The check is carried out only with your consent and is ordered by our CISO through our approved screening partner. The scope of the check depends on the role level. This step is performed late in the recruitment process and is used solely to support a secure and fact-based hiring decision. Don’t match every point? Apply anyway. We care more about how you think and what you’ve built than about ticking every box.
ABOUT UMAIN At Umain, we're not just creating software; we're crafting the future, one innovative project at a time. With our motto "Shape, Ship, Scale," we empower our team to not only envision the future but also play a pivotal role in building it. We're a dynamic team where you can shape the future, ship groundbreaking solutions, and scale your abilities in many different ways. THE ROLE We’re looking for a full stack developer who already works agentically. You write clear specs, run multiple agents in parallel against them, choose the right model for each job, and take full ownership of what ships. You’ll work on client products end to end, from shaping requirements with stakeholders through to production. You’ll also help define how Umain builds software with agents: the practices, tooling and standards the rest of the team uses. HOW WE BUILD We start from a clear spec, break the work into tasks agents can complete, run those agents in parallel, verify the output with tests, evals and review, then ship. The spec is the source of truth. Agents do much of the implementation. You own the spec, the orchestration and the quality of the result. WHAT YOU’LL DO Spec driven delivery * Define requirements in a structured way: identify the actors, describe their use cases, then derive the features that serve them. * Turn client needs into specs that both people and agents can build against: clear scope, acceptance criteria, interfaces and constraints. * Keep specs, tests and code in step as the product changes. * Break work into units that agents can complete and verify independently. Agent orchestration * Run and coordinate agent swarms: parallel agents, subagents and specialised roles (planning, implementation, review, testing). * Build and maintain the supporting tooling: MCP servers, agent skills, prompts, context files and isolated workspaces. * Design the checks that keep agent output trustworthy: test coverage, evals, guardrails and human review points. Model selection and mixing * Combine frontier and open-weight models to deliver results. * Route work by capability, cost, latency and data sensitivity, including self-hosted or private deployments where client data requires it. * Measure model performance on real tasks and change the mix when the evidence says so. Full stack engineering * Build secure, scalable web applications with TypeScript, React and Next.js. * Build backend services and APIs with Node.js and NestJS. * Create reusable UI components using design system principles. * Work with cloud infrastructure (GCP, AWS or Azure), infrastructure as code with Terraform, and CI/CD pipelines. * Build observable systems with metrics, logging and tracing, including for LLM and agent behaviour in production. Clients and team * Work directly with clients and cross-functional teams across design, product and data. * Explain agentic delivery, its trade-offs and its limits to technical and non-technical audiences. * Share what works: pair with colleagues, document patterns and help raise the agentic practice across Eidra. WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR * 3+ years of professional full stack experience, with strong TypeScript, React/Next.js, Node.js and core web fundamentals. * Hands-on experience delivering production software with coding agents (for example Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or similar), beyond autocomplete. * Strong requirement definition experience, working from actors to use cases to feature definitions with clear acceptance criteria. * A working spec driven development practice. You can show specs you’ve written and what agents built from them. * Experience running multiple agents in parallel and coordinating their output. * Practical experience using both frontier and open-weight models, with a view on when each is the right choice. * Strong engineering judgement. You read and review agent output critically and you own the result as your own code. * Comfort with ambiguity, and the consulting instinct to work it through with clients. * Curiosity. The tools change monthly and you enjoy keeping up. NICE TO HAVE * Building agentic features into client products: tool calling, RAG, MCP servers, multi-agent workflows. * Running open-weight models in production (for example vLLM, Ollama or managed inference). * LLM evaluation and observability tooling. * Contributions to open source agent tooling or published writing on agentic engineering. * Tailwind CSS, Storybook and design system work. * Experience in a consultancy or agency setting. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Don’t match every point? Apply anyway. We care more about how you think and what you’ve built than about ticking every box.

Founded in Stockholm in 2001, we are a growing team of 100+ experts in digital product strategy, design, and technology. We are a part of Eidra, a group of top-notch companies specializing in strategy, creativity, and engineering. As a collective we guide leaders in making meaningful and lasting change. PROJECTS We do not offer a list of pre-defined projects. Instead, we encourage you to take an active role in envisioning future digital products. Kindly submit your proposals, ideas or topics and we will assess potential alignments. SUGGESTED TOPICS Umain’s work is to produce high quality digital products for our customers, and the primary platforms for this are therefore web and mobile. But we work in a variety of fields and concern numerous topics, so any thesis area concerning the topics below are of interest to us: * AI-assisted software delivery. How coding agents change team structure, estimation, code review, quality and junior-developer growth. * Building reliable products on top of LLMs. Evaluation, testing, guardrails, cost and latency, and what "done" means when the behaviour is probabilistic. * Agentic systems in real business workflows. Where autonomy pays off, where humans need to stay in the loop, and how to design review and trust. * AI-native UX. Interfaces that go beyond the chat box, such as adaptive, generative or conversational interaction. This includes how users build trust in, and calibrate against, AI output. * Legacy modernisation. Using AI and better tooling to untangle old systems, migrate incrementally and reduce risk. * Messy-data pipelines. Turning inconsistent real-world inputs like spreadsheets, PDFs and free text into something products can rely on. * Regulation and responsible tech. The EU AI Act, Cyber Resilience Act, GDPR and accessibility law (the European Accessibility Act), and how they translate into engineering practice rather than just compliance paperwork. * Sustainable and efficient software. Measuring and reducing the energy and carbon footprint of apps, cloud workloads and AI usage. * Cross-platform and on-device development. The trade-offs between native, Flutter, React Native and web. This includes running models on-device for privacy and responsiveness. * Design systems and design-to-code. Closing the gap between design and implementation, and whether AI can make it reliable. * Developer experience and platform engineering. What makes consulting teams fast and consistent across many different client contexts. * Software for connected products. Automotive, IoT and in-vehicle or companion-app experiences, where hardware, cloud and mobile meet. * Consulting in an AI era. How AI changes the way software gets scoped, sold, priced and delivered, and what clients will expect from a consultancy in the future. PAST PROJECTS “Does a CQRS architecture improve query performance compared to a traditional CRUD architecture in read-heavy systems?” Command Query Responsibility Segregation (CQRS) is an architectural pattern that separates read operations (queries) from write operations (commands) in a software system into separate paths. Using a ticket booking system as the test case, a system with heavy read traffic and occasional spikes in bookings, this project measured how CQRS compares to CRUD (Create, Read, Update, Delete) on speed, capacity, and resource usage. "A comparative study of concurrency in Kotlin: Examination of platform threads, virtual threads, and coroutines" Designed to address the high resource consumption associated with traditional JVM platform threads, Kotlin Coroutines and Project Loom’s Virtual Threads offer modern approaches to concurrency. This study directly compared their performance across I/O-bound and CPU-bound scenarios, assessing key metrics such as memory overhead, CPU consumption, latency, and overall throughput. “How effective are different strategies for reducing hallucinations in RAG systems applied to internal technical documentation, and to what extent can long-context prompting replace or supplement RAG for the same purpose?” This study evaluated methods for minimizing hallucinations in technical documentation systems, analyzing performance metrics such as accuracy, latency, and cost while comparing optimal Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) configurations directly with long-context prompting techniques. THE PROCESS 1. Following your submission, our team conducts an internal evaluation of all incoming project proposals and concepts. 2. Should there be a promising alignment, we will invite you to visit our office to share more about your vision. 3. You will be paired with a dedicated supervisor who will collaborate with you to refine and focus your scope. 4. Kick off your thesis journey! QUESTIONS If you have any questions feel free to send them to student@umain.com
We build the backends behind products that millions of people use every day. Our motto is Shape, Ship, Scale: we work out what to build, ship it, and help it grow. Now, we are looking for a senior backend engineer to join us in Gothenburg. We are six people at Umain in Gothenburg today, and we share an office with around 40 colleagues from across Eidra. So it is a small, close team with a much bigger room behind it. The work You will build and run backend systems for Swedish and international clients. The scale is real: * 400M+ total app downloads * 50M+ monthly active users * Backends handling tens of thousands of requests per second Most of our work is in Kotlin, Go, and TypeScript, and we pick the tool that fits the project rather than forcing one stack onto everything. Day to day that can mean designing cloud-native systems with Terraform across AWS, GCP and Azure, building solid data models, making systems observable with proper metrics, logs and tracing, and owning CI/CD with containerised deployments. You own systems end to end, from API design to operations, and you work closely with product, design, analysis and testing rather than in a silo. What we are looking for You are an experienced backend engineer, roughly five years or more building and running services in production, who is comfortable owning a system from start to finish. You are strong in at least one of Kotlin, Go or TypeScript and happy to pick up the others. You make good technical calls in a team: weighing tradeoffs, reviewing code, mentoring colleagues. And you think past the ticket in front of you to maintainability and long-term health. In consulting the next project rarely looks like the last one. If that sounds like a feature rather than a risk, you will fit in well. Familiarity with agentic development tools is a plus. If you do not tick every box, apply anyway. Our career framework sets transparent levels, so pay and growth track what you do, not how well you negotiate. You build your development plan together with your coach. * Everyone gets a coach, for both professional and personal development. * Flexibility that respects your life.
