Department of Aquatic Resources (SLU Aqua) Climate change is impacting aquatic ecosystems worldwide, creating an urgent need for management strategies that strengthen ecological resilience and support sustainable use of aquatic resources. In this two-year postdoctoral project, you will use quantitative evidence-based syntheses to identify how aquatic management can enhance ecosystem resilience to the impacts of climate change. This position offers opportunities for career development at the interface between ecological research and practical management through scientific publishing, conference participation, and stakeholder engagement. About the position We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher with a strong interest in evidence-based conservation and restoration ecology. The project combines fundamental ecological and evolutionary research with applied management science to address: Which management interventions most effectively increase resilience to climate change in aquatic ecosystems? How do dispersal, ecological interactions and evolutionary adaptation influence the success of climate adaptation measures? How can evidence synthesis be translated into practical decision support for environmental managers? You will apply systematic reviews, meta-analyses and other evidence synthesis methods to answer these questions. The work includes close collaboration with practitioners to ensure scientifically robust and practically relevant guidance for climate adaptation. The project is expected to result in scientific publications while directly informing evidence-based environmental policy and management. We offer a collaborative research environment with strong links between fundamental ecological research and environmental management. Southern Swedish Forest Research Centre Third-cycle subject area: Forest management Description of the doctoral project: Swedish society is debating the long-term capacity of even-aged conifer-dominated forestry to reliably produce biomass over the coming century, and simultaneously sustain the breadth of ecosystem services that society increasingly demands from forestlands. Alternative approaches to production forests, such as restoration of broadleaved forests are thus of growing interest. The increased use of such alternatives may enhance the overall resilience of Swedish forests to projected climate change, better balance the provision of forest ecosystem services, provide vital habitat for forest biodiversity, and thereby help ensure forest ecosystem services delivery over the coming century. The EU Nature restoration Regulation and Sweden's national environmental goals, provide official recognition of the urgent need to restore and improve the ecological condition of forest ecosystems across Europe. Our goal with this project is to identify cost-effective paths forward for the regeneration and restoration of new mixed broadleaved dominated forests. About the position: We intend to contrast passive versus active pathways for restoring such diverse forests. To address such issues, we will use existing experiments, chronosequences, and survey-data for evaluating the effects from restoration on ecosystem services and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of international researchers. We are looking for a person who, as part of a PhD, will address these challenges, but we welcome those who bring specific research interests which can shape the ultimate direction of the PhD. Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment Third-cycle subject area Biology Description of the doctoral project Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the most pressing global health challenges of our time. A key driver of AMR spread is the horizontal transfer of antibiotic resistance genes via conjugative plasmids — mobile genetic elements that move between bacteria. Plasmid-dependent phages (PDPs) are viruses that specifically infect bacteria carrying these plasmids, making them a potentially powerful but largely overlooked tool in controlling resistance gene transmission. This PhD project is part of ECOPHARM, a research project funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (Wallenberg Academy Fellows 2025) and is based at the Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment, SLU Uppsala. The overarching aim of ECOPHARM is to decipher the mechanisms driving PDP interactions with conjugative plasmids and bacterial hosts, and to understand their impact on antibiotic resistance gene transmission in aquatic environments. As a PhD student, you will investigate the diversity, ecology, and functional interactions of plasmid-dependent phages in aquatic ecosystems. The work will combine environmental sampling, cultivation-based approaches, metagenomics, genome analysis, and experimental infection assays.
