Om Sunderby folkhögskola Sunderby folkhögskola bedriver utbildningar och kurser inom allt från gymnasieämnen till kreativa utbildningar med kunskap och människan i fokus. Våra huvudmän är LO-distriktet i Norra Sverige, ABF Norr och Unga Örnar Norrbotten. I stiftelsen driver vi olika typer av projekt för att stärka demokratin och att människor i utanförskap ska få verktyg och stöd att påverka sin framtid. Vårt projektteam består av två fasta projektledare och antalet övriga projektmedarbetare varierar utifrån de projekt vi har i gång. Om projektet DC Farming: Målet med projektet DC Farming är att utveckla ett koncept för hur Arbetsintegrerande sociala företag (ASF) kan använda restströmmar, som exempelvis restvärme från datacenter, för att skapa arbetstillfällen för människor som står långt från arbetsmarknaden och samtidigt bidra till lokal livsmedelsproduktion. ASF har som främsta mål att skapa sysselsättning för människor som annars har svårt att få arbete och verksamheten företaget bedriver är verktyget för att uppnå det målet. Vi odlar grönsaker hydroponiskt i ett växthus i Boden, som värms av överskottsvärme. I växthuset odlar vi också svamp i kaffesump och i en container utanför föder vi upp larver på restströmmar från tex livsmedelsbutiker. Larverna blir sedan djurfoder. Parallellt tar vi fram verktyg och modeller för att stötta arbetsintegreringen. Meningen med att ta fram konceptet är att fler ska kunna göra samma sak på andra platser. DC Farming är ett samverkansprojekt mellan Sunderby folkhögskola, Coompanion Norrbotten och Bodens kommun. Projektet finansieras av Svenska ESF rådet och Region Norrbotten. Projektet har pågått i två och ett halvt år och avslutas 2027-03-31. Den sista projekttiden kommer mycket fokus läggas på att knyta ihop säcken kring konceptet och hjälpa deltagarna att driva verksamheten vidare som ett ASF. Beskrivning av tjänsten: Som projektmedarbetare i DC Farming arbetar du dagligen tillsammans med deltagare i våra verksamheter. Du arbetar främst i växthuset beläget i Boden där du handleder, utbildar och leder verksamheten. Du arbetar tillsammans med en handledare som delar sin tjänst mellan Bodens kommun och projektet DC Farming. Som handledare skapar du en trygg och välkomnande miljö för de deltagare som kommer till verksamheten. Du deltar också, tillsammans med projektledaren och projektmedarbetare från övriga samverkansparter, i konceptutvecklingen. Tjänsten innebär arbete med personer som står långt från arbetsmarknaden och kan ha komplex problematik, såsom psykisk ohälsa och svag etablering i samhället. I växthuset samsas flera verksamheter och deltagarna är där på olika premisser. Det är viktigt att du tycker om att hjälpa människor att utvecklas, samverka och lösa problem tillsammans med andra. Eftersom vi utvecklar och provar nya saker är det en fördel om du är nyfiken och har förmåga att följa och utvärdera de tester som genomförs. Department of Ecology The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) is one of Northern Europe largest academic hubs for ecological research and offers a dynamic and excellent research environment with modern infrastructure. The Department of Ecology has about 150 employees, of whom around 40 work at the Grimsö Research Station in Bergslagen. Together, the SLU Ecology Centre and Grimsö Research Station conduct research on sustainable agriculture and forestry, plant protection, nature conservation, and wildlife management, and provide scientific knowledge to inform Sweden and Europe’s environmental policies. About the position Project Can we foresee the outcomes of public policies, political choices and other decisions? We are finding out by developing serious games and running them using AI. We are building large-scale simulations of societal processes (environmental negotiations, nature conservation policies, and hybrid-threat scenarios) in which every actor is an autonomous AI agent powered by Large Language Models (LLMs). These agents simulate real-world stakeholders, from government ministers to interest groups, and interact through natural language in complex strategic settings. We then run thousands of iterations to map the distribution of outcomes. This effort is part of a new research program Articulating Complexity ( https://www.slu.se/articulating-complexity/ ) hosted at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) and led by Guillaume Chapron (Docent). It is funded by grants from the Swedish Research Council (VR), the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Environmental Research (Mistra), and the Swedish Research Council for Sustainable Development (FORMAS). Our goal is to build a novel methodology at the intersection of AI, ecology, political science, and complex system analysis that may change how policies are designed and stress-tested and how governments prepare for crises. We are looking for ambitious research engineer to join this effort. Tasks and duties You will be the person who makes the simulations actually run. Concretely, this means: Building the LLM-agent infrastructure (from an existing working implementation). Each agent has a multi-tier memory and an affect state that modifies both prompts and available actions, and a strategic reasoning layer that tracks reputation, commitments, and mental models of other agents. Extending and maintaining the multi-agent simulation framework. A simulation runs dozens of concurrent LLM instances, communicating through structured message-passing protocols. You will develop and maintain this framework, including the validation methodology. Running large-scale Monte Carlo simulations at scale on GPU-enabled HPC clusters (e.g. NAISS). Publishing and dissemination of the project results. You will co-author scientific publications from the project. The research will produce papers at the intersection of computational social science, ecology, security studies, and AI. You will work closely with the PI (Guillaume Chapron https://www.slu.se/en/profilepages/c/guillaume-chapron/) and a postdoctoral researcher in computational social science (to be recruited concurrently). The three of you will form the core team. Your profile Required A degree in computer science, engineering, physics, applied mathematics, or a related quantitative field. A Master or engineering degree is sufficient; a PhD is welcome but not required. Strong programming skills, especially in Python, and sufficient understanding of machine learning/deep learning to work effectively with modern generative AI systems. Ability to assess and incorporate cutting-edge generative AI developments into the project. Experience with software engineering practices such as version control, testing, documentation, modular design, and reproducible workflows. Ability to work independently, debug complex systems under time pressure, and take ownership of technical infrastructure. Desirable Experience with LLMs, including programmatic use through APIs and local deployment. The candidate should be able to select, configure, adapt, and critically evaluate LLMs for research applications. Experience with deep reinforcement learning, agent-based modelling, or multi-agent systems, including the design of simulation environments, interacting agents, decision rules, feedback mechanisms, and scenario-based analyses. Experience with high-performance computing: batch job submission, GPU workflows, and managing large-scale computational experiments. Interest in the application domain: nature conservation, environmental policy, political science, geopolitics and security studies, complex adaptive systems. Each simulation is defined by a scenario with an initial world state, a cast of agents, communication channels, institutional constraints, document corpora. You will design scenarios focusing on negotiations of nature conservation policies and socio-ecological hybrid warfare. Agent persona construction. For each agent you will define the identity prompt, ideology vector, personality traits, decision mode weights, and the affect parameters that govern when agents escalate beyond their default moderation. This means extracting positions, rhetorical styles, strategic preferences, and psychological profiles from real-world sources. Analysis and validation of simulation outputs. After Monte Carlo runs, you will analyze the distribution of outcomes (e.g. which policies emerge) and will also design behavioural signature validation (e.g. verifying that simulated agents exhibit the expected action distributions when compared against empirical baselines). Department of Crop Production Ecology Biology with a specialisation in ecology - The Department of Crop Production Ecology is seeking a PhD student in plant breeding and plant protection against insect pests. Description: Chemical insecticides have been an important tool for limiting crop losses caused by insect pests and insect-borne viruses, but their availability has declined sharply in recent years. Crop varieties with resistance, tolerance or other traits that enable them to avoid insect damage and viruses spread by insects will therefore be a cornerstone of future integrated pest management. The vision for the new project 'Node for Plant Breeding against Insect Pests and Viruses' within the centre SLU Grogrund is to reduce crop losses caused by pests and insect-borne viruses through crop breeding. In Sweden, some 300,000 individuals and families own about 50% of the forestland that spans across two-thirds of the country. These family forest owners will need to undertake the preponderance of actions for creating more biodiverse forests in Sweden. In an interdisciplinary project funded by the Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation, we pose three specific research questions: What salient elements in cognitive models represent family forest owners’ perceptions and judgement strategies about forest biodiversity on their ownerships? Do family forest owners have the capability, opportunity and motivation to change towards biodiversity-enhancing forest management behaviors? Can interventions providing financial compensation encourage family forest owners’ change toward adopting biodiversity-enhancing forest management behaviors? To help answer these questions, we seek to recruit a postdoctoral researcher to join researchers in applied economics, psychology, and forestry. Department of Aquatic Resources (SLU Aqua) Climate change is impacting aquatic ecosystems worldwide, creating an urgent need for management strategies that strengthen ecological resilience and support sustainable use of aquatic resources. In this two-year postdoctoral project, you will use quantitative evidence-based syntheses to identify how aquatic management can enhance ecosystem resilience to the impacts of climate change. About the position The Department of Aquatic Resources has an immediate opening for a permanent position as researcher in stock assessment and advice for fisheries management in a unit that includes stock assessment at the Institute of Marine Research. The unit conducts research and stock assessment on fish and shellfish and provides scientific advice for fisheries at both the national and international level. Department of Forest Ecology and Management Third-cycle subject area Biology Description of the doctoral project Nitrogen availability is a major constraint on plant growth and carbon sequestration in boreal forest soils. Although proteins constitute a large fraction of the soil nitrogen pool, the processes governing their breakdown into amino acids remain poorly understood. A critical knowledge gap lies in understanding the composition and properties of soil proteins and their role in regulating nitrogen cycling. This PhD project will address this challenge by characterizing soil protein composition and investigating the mechanisms that control nitrogen turnover. The doctoral candidate will primarily work in the laboratory, analysing natural soils from mesocosm and field experiments. Department of Forest Resource Management Would you like to help shape the future of the forest landscape? We are currently looking for a postdoctoral researcher for a two-year position based at the Department of Forest Resource Management at SLU in Umeå. About the position We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher with a particular interest in forest landscape modelling. As part of a two-year postdoctoral project, you will use the Heureka decision support system to analyse how different forest management strategies affect biodiversity and the provision of ecosystem services, as well as how these interact with the development of wind power. The work involves quantifying conflicts and synergies between different sustainability goals in the forest landscape using simulation and optimisation. The analysis will be based on spatially explicit future scenarios, developed in collaboration with various stakeholder groups, and will include indicators such as biomass production, carbon sequestration, recreational values and wind energy. You are part of our surgical team, which works with excellent veterinary care, teaching, and research. It is a varied and stimulating everyday life in a round-the-clock operation at Sweden's only university animal hospital. You will support and develop the surgery team, provide guidance and support to veterinary nurses, ensure that the flow through the surgery department is efficient and safe for the patients, supervise and teach students as well as residents and junior veterinarians. You aim to get involved in strategic development and management of the clinic. Participation in the out-of-hours service is also expected. Collaboration with colleagues within your discipline and across the faculty is a part of the role. Opportunities to engage in ongoing clinical research are available, and you may contribute to lecturing, small group teaching, and assessing veterinary students. A crucial aspect of your work will involve advising and collaborating with veterinarians in other disciplines, such as intensive care and in-patient care. Regular consultations with veterinarians, including referral veterinarians, is an integral part of this role. Your profile We are seeking a board-certified International specialist (European or American College of Veterinary Surgery (ECVS or ACVS Diplomate) in small animal surgery; alternatively, you hold a recognised national specialist title in small animal surgery. You have veterinary credentials from a university in Sweden or another EU/EEA country or from Switzerland or other teaching institution with credentials that are accredited by the European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education (EAEVE) or the American Veterinary Association (AVMA). It is an advantage if you also hold a PhD or have teaching experience. Proficiency in English is required, and you either speak a Scandinavian language or are committed to learning Swedish within a time-period of ca 2-3 years. You are communicative with a strong ability to create and maintain good relationships with customers and colleagues. You have a good ability to involve the surgery team in the daily patient flows. Southern Swedish Forest Research Centre Third-cycle subject area: Forest management Description of the doctoral project: Swedish society is debating the long-term capacity of even-aged conifer-dominated forestry to reliably produce biomass over the coming century, and simultaneously sustain the breadth of ecosystem services that society increasingly demands from forestlands. Alternative approaches to production forests, such as restoration of broadleaved forests are thus of growing interest. The increased use of such alternatives may enhance the overall resilience of Swedish forests to projected climate change, better balance the provision of forest ecosystem services, provide vital habitat for forest biodiversity, and thereby help ensure forest ecosystem services delivery over the coming century. The EU Nature restoration Regulation and Sweden's national environmental goals, provide official recognition of the urgent need to restore and improve the ecological condition of forest ecosystems across Europe. Our goal with this project is to identify cost-effective paths forward for the regeneration and restoration of new mixed broadleaved dominated forests. About the position: We intend to contrast passive versus active pathways for restoring such diverse forests. To address such issues, we will use existing experiments, chronosequences, and survey-data for evaluating the effects from restoration on ecosystem services and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of international researchers. We are looking for a person who, as part of a PhD, will address these challenges, but we welcome those who bring specific research interests which can shape the ultimate direction of the PhD. Requirements: To meet the general entry requirements you must have been awarded a second-cycle (Master's) qualification, satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad (Higher Education Ordinance 1993:100, Chapter 7, Section 39).
