Arbetssättet kräver att du är nyfiken även på områden utanför din egen ämnesbakgrund och tycker om att samarbeta med kollegor för att skapa helhet och mening i deltagarnas lärande. En betydande del av arbetet sker på engelska. Därför behöver du ha mycket goda kunskaper i engelska och kunna leda lärprocesser på engelska, både muntligt och skriftligt. We are looking for a Ph.D. student to conduct ground-breaking research using machine learning methods with the aim of developing a new generation of welding materials. The project is multidisciplinary, and you will work closely together with experts at Chalmers and industry with long and recognized experience of welding science and AI methods. About us The Ph.D. student will be employed at the Division of Energy Technology at the Deptartment of Environmental and Energy Sciences at Chalmers University of Technology. We conduct research and offer education mainly in energy technology and energy systems. Our research focuses on combustion and gasification of biomass, technologies for carbon dioxide avoidance, development of energy materials, and sustainable energy systems. The current project will be carried out in close collaboration with the Division of Chemical Physics at Chalmers, which conducts fundamental research with respect to computational materials using first-principles methods and machine learning approaches. About the research project Welding is, in many ways, the backbone of our society and is prevalent across most industries, including automotive, energy, and manufacturing. Still, the industry is associated with high resource use and depends on certain strategic and critical metals. In this project, financed by the Swedish Energy Agency, you will work closely with industrial partners ESAB and Höganäs, with the overall vision of developing effective algorithms for rapid, robust predictions of welding materials. Who we are looking for The following requirements are mandatory: To qualify as a Doctoral student, you must have a Master's degree (masterexamen) of 120 credits or a Master's degree (magisterexamen) of 60 credits* in the fields of physics, chemistry, chemical engineering, data- or material sciences (or equivalent competence). Strong written and verbal communication skills in English Social competence is important as the position is interdisciplinary, i.e., includes collaboration between two departments at Chalmers and industrial collaborators. *for students with an education earned outside of Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor's degree is accepted. The following experience will strengthen your application: Experience in using or developing machine learning or artificial intelligence algorithms. Experience with first-principle methods for material modelling, such as density functional theory and molecular dynamics. Experience of research or courses exploring thermodynamics, chemistry, or physics of materials such as metals and metal oxides. Develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 20 percent of working hours Development of AI and ML models to establish composition–processing–property relationships in welding materials and to predict new material formulations. This includes both conventional predictive models and generative and active-learning approaches. The research will be conducted in close collaboration with industry, and we envisage that some research time will also be spent at industrial sites. Contract terms The Doctoral student positions are fully funded from start. The position is a fixed-term appointment of four years, with the possibility of teaching up to 20%, which extends the position to five years. A starting salary of 35,725 SEK per month (valid from May 1, 2026). Doctoral studies require physical presence throughout the entire study period. A valid residence permit must be presented by the study start date; otherwise, the admission may be withdrawn. The European Spallation Source (ESS) will soon be the world’s most powerful source of neutrons, providing researchers with unique opportunities to explore the structure of materials at the atomic level. Neutron scattering at ESS will address critical questions in physics, chemistry, geology, materials science and life science. About the role Within the Science Directorate, the Scientific Support Division provides the ESS neutron science program with experimental support including sample environments, user laboratories, deuteration, and hall coordination in close collaboration with Instrument Divisions. The Sample Environment group at ESS is preparing to support all ESS neutron instruments by developing, assembling and integrating a broad range of specialized equipment for achieving both very low and very high temperatures, high magnetic fields, high pressure, vacuum, gas or liquid flow, lasers, and in many cases, automated systems. Once ESS transitions into operations in early 2027, we will provide operational support for all sample environments on the instruments in close collaboration with scientists, as well as continuing the development of new sample environments. We are now seeking a Sample Environment Engineer to support the development, commissioning and the operations of high temperature furnaces, as well as related gas handling and pressurized gas systems. In this role, you will be responsible for delivering sample environment projects in these areas, working in close collaboration with other members of the Sample environment group as well as academic research groups to develop new equipment and provide operational support for early science experiments at ESS. As part of this role, you will specifically develop new sample environments in collaboration with the universities participating in the ESS Early Science Initiative project “Sustainable and functional materials from local resources” funded by the Swedish Research Council. Day-to-day, you will: Specify, design, develop and procure equipment for high temperature/gas handling and pressurized sample environment systems. Work with academic researchers to develop technical specifications and propose solutions and designs to meet scientific requirements. Assemble, integrate and commission sample environments and associated equipment. Install, operate, maintain and repair high temperature/gas handling/pressurized systems and related equipment. Collaborate with ESS instrument teams and academic user groups to establish specifications and priorities for new high temperature/gas handling/pressurized systems. Provide operational sample environment support for the ESS instruments including on-call support. Provide expert experiment safety reviews for user proposals and carry out safety testing of user-supplied equipment. Collaborate with ESS instrument teams, users, and sample environment groups at other large-scale facilities to further develop high temperature/gas handling/pressurized sample environment equipment and technologies. Participate in the setting-up, maintenance and operation of the sample environment workshops and facilities. This is a full-time, fixed-term position for around 3 years based at ESS Campus in Lund, Sweden. About you You have up to an MSc level degree in an engineering subject (e.g. mechanical, materials or metallurgical engineering) with relevance to this position, which focuses on the development and practical realization of high temperature and pressurized gas handling systems for scientific measurements. Previous experience of design as well as hands-on work experience with high-temperature equipment and gas handling/pressurised gas systems is required. You also have previous experience of mechanical assembly, maintenance and repairs, as well as relevant knowledge of material behavior at high temperatures and hazards involved in pressurized gas systems. Experience of developing scientific or technical equipment involving controlling or monitoring temperature, mass, gas pressure or other experimental parameters would be considered particularly beneficial for this role. Experience with additional techniques including vacuum welding, brazing, wiring, light sheet metal work, and tube bending is also regarded as a merit, as are basic machining skills. Knowledge of control systems and programming would be an advantage, but not a requirement. You are accustomed to working with scientists as well as technicians to define and deliver projects and support operating equipment. You take as much pride in designing engineering solutions to meet scientific requirements as providing hands-on practical solutions to equipment problems, and approach all tasks with a collaborative, service-oriented mind-set. You are eager to learn new things, adapt quickly, and interested in contributing across a variety of tasks besides your core area of competence. A genuine interest in designing as well as building, repairing, or improving experimental equipment is vital. Prior work in a sample environment group or large-scale facility working with high temperature furnaces would be considered a merit, but is not essential. About the position The Department of Aquatic Resources has an immediate opening for a permanent position as researcher in stock assessment and advice for fisheries management in a unit that includes stock assessment at the Institute of Marine Research. The unit conducts research and stock assessment on fish and shellfish and provides scientific advice for fisheries at both the national and international level. The work is conducted in close collaboration with other units at the institute and at the wider SLU Aqua, contributing to associated research fields, such as, fisheries monitoring, impacts of climate change, marine food webs and ecosystem-based fisheries management (EBFM). Lyten Labs is seeking an Electrical Engineer with a specialization in automated industrial (battery) production equipment and utilities. As an Electrical engineer for Facilities, Utilities & Equipment you will own and develop the electrical infrastructure that powers Labs’ facilities, utilities and production equipment. You will deliver safe, available and energy-efficient systems that support pilot-line manufacturing (mixing, coating, calendaring, assembly and formation & aging) and the on-site validation Labs. Key responsibilities include (but are not limited to) Engineer and maintain LV/MV distribution (switchgear, transformers, UPS) and earthing/bonding for production, labs and offices. Specify, review and commission power distribution to pilot lines and utilities (e.g. dry rooms, HVAC, process cooling, vacuum) with correct protection, short-circuit ratings and risk controls. Ensure designs and installations comply with applicable EU/SE directives. Support ATEX related interfaces where applicable. Define electrical PM strategies for utilities and safety systems (fire detection interfaces, E-stops, interlocks). Implement energy-efficient equipment to support Lyten sustainability model. Department for Molecular Sciences Subject area: Biology Description of the PhD projects We are seeking two PhD students in the field of biogas production, with a focus on the digestion process. The biogas process is currently an important tool for achieving multiple societal benefits and environmental goals. Through anaerobic digestion, a wide range of organic waste streams and residues can be treated while simultaneously closing nutrient cycles and producing renewable energy and nutrient-rich biofertilizers. Biogas production also contributes to increased preparedness and self-sufficiency. The biogas process is driven by complex microbial communities that must remain balanced to ensure efficient and stable biogas production. At the Department of Molecular Sciences, research is conducted both on process operation and optimization and on process microbiology, often in close integration. The PhD projects will focus on the following areas, with some opportunity for the successful candidates to influence the detailed project design. Biogas production from agricultural feedstocks – Process optimisation. Biogas production in the agricultural sector is currently expanding rapidly, creating a strong need for new knowledge and technological development. As a PhD student in this project, you will operate and evaluate different laboratory-scale biogas processes with the aim of optimising both biogas production and biofertiliser quality. The processes will be studied using chemical and microbiological analyses, and there will also be opportunities to work with process modelling. Process microbiology.
