How can transport systems remain robust in an increasingly uncertain world? At Chalmers University of Technology, we are looking for a doctoral student who wants to explore this question and contribute to the development of resilient transport solutions in business networks. This is an opportunity to engage in collaborative, high-impact research at the intersection of supply chain management, industry practice, and societal challenges. We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student to join the Division of Supply and Operations Management at the Department of Technology Management and Economics, Chalmers University of Technology. We offer an employment of up to five years. The successful candidate will engage in a research project focusing on resilience and business networks. The project is led from Chalmers and joint with Swedish School of Textiles, University of Borås, School of Business, Economics, and Law, University of Gothenburg, and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, and in collaboration with industry. About us The Department of Technology Management and Economics conducts research and education at the intersection of technological development and management/policy. The division of Supply & Operations Management (SOM) research relates to supply chain management, and areas, such as, purchasing, industrial marketing, business networks, supply chain strategy, operations planning and control, material handling and freight transport. Digitalization, circularity and resilience are important drivers and enablers. Our goal is to perform high quality research and education at bachelor, master and doctoral levels. We accomplish this by contributing to improvements in all our research areas, in theory as well as in practice. We focus mainly on empirical research in close interaction with industry. About the research project Over the past decade, several events have caused major disruptions to global transport and supply chains. The research project, in which the PhD student will be working, focuses on how resilient transport solutions are developed within business networks and on the importance of managing tensions in this context. The project aims to examine, through case studies, the opportunities and obstacles shaping the development of resilient supply chains in a turbulent geopolitical environment. The theoretical frameworks and analysis will be guided by the 'industrial network approach', emphasizing buyer-supplier relationships and networks. The project will involve three sub-studies focusing on different industrial applications: (1) fashion products, (2) advanced transport solutions, and (3) logistics, transport, and distribution services. Södertörn University welcomes doctoral proposals in History, to be conducted within the research project: “Money(-)making empire. Monetary policies and practices in the Swedish Baltic Empire, ca. 1600–1800”. Visit the project website for more information https://moneymakingempire.se/. The project “Money(-)making Empire” examines monetary evolution in the Baltic Sea region within the broader context of early modern Northern Europe, using the Swedish Empire as a case study. Conceptualising the empire as a polycentric polity, the project challenges nation-state–centred historiography and instead analyses money as a transregional lens through which flows of power, conflict, and integration can be traced across imperial spaces. Monetary policy was central to both warfare and empire-building and its effects extended far beyond Sweden proper, influencing peasants, soldiers, merchants, urban authorities, and foreign rulers across the Baltic Sea Region. For more information, please https://ostersjostiftelsen.se/project/money-making-empire-monetary-policies-and-practices-in-the-swedish-baltic-empire-ca-1600-1800/. History at Södertörn University is a dynamic environment for historical research and education, with researchers who specialise in a variety of time periods and societal or cultural processes. Sweden, the Nordics, and the Baltic Sea region and Eastern Europe are the main geographical areas of expertise. For more information, please https://www.sh.se/english/sodertorn-university/research/subjects/history. For a Swedish version https://www.sh.se/institutioner--amnen/institutionen-for-historia-och-samtidsstudier/historia The Department of History is part of the Historical Studies research area at Södertörn University, an area of the humanities in which aspects of society, culture and heritage are studied from different perspectives. For a Swedish version https://www.sh.se/forskning/forskarutbildning/forskarutbildningsomraden/historiska-studier. Description of the doctoral position The successful applicants will complete their doctoral theses as part of the project and within its thematic and theoretical framework. These doctoral projects may adopt a range of perspectives, such as analyses of monetary practices and discourses among and/or between different social groups (such as the nobility, merchants, peasants, and burghers), as well as political and administrative discourses, policies, and practices at the imperial, national, and/or local levels. We therefore welcome applications that encompass the full spectrum of approaches, from macro- to micro-level studies of social and cultural relations and practices, provided that they align with the project’s aims. The project advances three interrelated analytical perspectives. First, it emphasises the polycentric nature of the Swedish Empire, integrating its Baltic and German provinces into a single framework and showing how power was negotiated through multiple institutional and social centres. Second, it treats money not merely as an economic instrument but as a practical and socially embedded problem, foregrounding everyday monetary practices, coin shortages, and alternative means of exchange among ordinary people. Third, it focuses on circulation, examining how money, knowledge, and practices moved across regions and how popular reactions – petitions, protests and riots – both responded to and constrained state policy. Methodologically, the project combines quantitative analysis with qualitative readings. Beyond its historical contribution, the project offers comparative insights into early modern composite states and provides a historically grounded perspective on contemporary monetary integration and tension in the Baltic Sea region and Europe more broadly. The work environment at Södertörn University, as well as within the research project, is bilingual, with both Swedish and English as working languages. Entry requirements The general entry requirements are: 1. a second-cycle qualification, or 2. fulfilled requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or 3. substantially equivalent knowledge acquired in some other way in Sweden or abroad. The Faculty Board may permit an exemption from the general entry requirements for an individual applicant, if there are special grounds. (Ordinance 2010:1064) Specific entry requirements The specific entry requirements are met by someone who has at least 90 credits in History, Economic History, the History of Ideas or the equivalent and who has authored an independent dissertation in History worth at least 15 credits at Master’s level. Prerequisites for undertaking the degree programme are the ability to assimilate scientific work in English and command of the language necessary for work on the thesis. Eligible applicants will first be ranked according to their ability to assimilate education at research level, then other qualifications will be reviewed on the basis of this ranking. The applicant’s communication and cooperation skills may also be assessed using references and interviews Admission and employment This position includes admission to third-cycle education, i.e. research level, and employment on a doctoral studentship at the School of Historical and Contemporary Studies at Södertörn University. The intended outcome for admitted students is a PhD. The programme covers 240 credits, which is the equivalent of four years of full-time study. The position may be extended by a maximum of one year due to the inclusion of departmental duties, i.e. education, research and/or administration (equivalent to no more than 20% of full-time). Other grounds for extension could be leave of absence because of illness or for service in the defence forces, an elected position in a trade union/student organisation, or parental leave. Provisions relating to employment on a doctoral studentship are in the Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 5, Sections 1-7. What you'll do: Take full ownership of the engineering operating system within your first three months: tools, vendor contracts, on-call staffing, and platform support, so no escalations land on the CTO by default and engineers never lose time to broken tooling or unclear process. Audit and overhaul the hiring process end to end, improving interviewer calibration, role consistency, and onboarding so that time-to-hire and time-to-first-meaningful-contribution both come down measurably. Own TLT facilitation and drive EM layer consistency, with sessions that end in decisions, shared practices aligned across teams, and cross-EM escalations resolving below CTO level within six months. Build and maintain the engineering progression framework and performance data infrastructure, from a sharp draft in the first three months to a live, Tech 2.0-aligned framework with salary bands agreed with HR and EMs actively using it in performance conversations. Drive cultural and strategic change from decision to operating reality, particularly the Tech 2.0 rollout, owning the rollout plan, adoption tracking, and the rituals that make change stick across the org over an 18-month horizon. What we're looking for: A background as a senior, principal, or staff engineer, with subsequent experience in engineering leadership or management, ideally including people management in a scaling product organisation. Proven ability to operate without formal authority, driving change through credibility and relationships rather than positional power, and comfortable influencing senior engineers and EMs alike. Strong systems thinking with a bias for simplification: able to look at a complex set of processes and find the version that removes friction without losing what matters. High signal-to-noise communication, both written and verbal, with the ability to translate between strategic direction and operational reality and surface the right information at the right level. A passion for AI and a drive to experiment with new tools to enhance creativity, decisions, and execution. If you enjoy responsibility, momentum and meaningful challenge, you will thrive here. What you'll do: * Own the engineering operating system, keeping tooling, vendor management, on-call and platform support running so engineers never lose time to broken processes. Own engineering performance visibility, building and maintaining shared metrics infrastructure across investment tracking, shipping pace, and quality, surfacing signals before they become problems. Own progression, performance, and compensation alignment, keeping the framework current and driving salary band alignment with HR. Make hiring and onboarding fast and consistent across engineering managers, from interviewer calibration to reducing time to first meaningful contribution. Support and sharpen the engineering management layer, facilitating leadership sessions and driving strategic initiatives from decision to done, including stepping in as interim manager when needed. What we're looking for: * A strong engineering background as a senior engineer, principal engineer or architect, with the credibility to earn trust from senior engineers quickly. * Experience leading and managing people and performing teams, potentially as a CTO or VP in a smaller organisation. * A systems thinker with a bias for simplification: someone who can find the version of a process or framework that's 60% simpler and 90% as good. * The ability to drive change across teams without formal authority, building alignment through credibility, relationships and clear thinking. * A passion for AI and a drive to experiment with new tools to enhance creativity, decisions, and execution. How we hire 1. Discovery call with a Recruiter 2. Hiring manager discussion 3. Case study 4. Values discussion 5. Leadership talk 6. With us, you will collaborate with dedicated colleagues, have access to modern research infrastructure, and enjoy strong opportunities to attract external funding. You will have the space to make a real difference for your students, your research, and society at large. The Urban Water Engineering research group seeks a driven and committed postdoc with a focus on how sustainable management of stormwater sediments can contribute to improved water quality. Take the opportunity to join one of the leading stormwater research groups in the world with an international, creative and dynamic environment and close cooperation with the industry and universities worldwide. The group consists of about 50 members including senior researchers, Swedish and international adjunct professors and about 20 doctoral students. The group has an extensive national and international collaboration network. Subject description Urban Water Engineering encompasses the entire urban water system (storm drains, drinking water supply and wastewater) with respect to collection, transport and treatment, as well as organisation and planning. The research aims to encourage a strong economy, clean environment and the wise use of resources, while preserving the public’s health and safety. Project description Stormwater carries a variety of pollutants from urban environments, posing major challenges for the protection of surface waters. Urban drainage infrastructures such as gully pots and stormwater ponds are critical to mitigate these challenges. Over time, the accumulation of sediments and associated contaminants in these infrastructures lead to an impaired performance and thus requiring routine and environmentally safe maintenance operations. As the use of urban drainage infrastructures expands, the mass of sediments and associated contaminants retained in such infrastructure will continue to grow, amplifying both management challenges and potential environmental risks. Fully characterising these challenges within a wider technical and socio-economic context is essential to ensure that the accumulation of sediments prevents–rather than simply defers– their discharge to coastal environments. Addressing this need is the central aim of this project, responding directly to the needs of municipalities, authorities and practitioners for evidence-based tools, clear governance and legal guidance, environmentally responsible maintenance methods and sustainable financial models, and contributes to reducing land-based pressures on coastal and marine environments through system-level transformation. The work within the project includes the evaluation and development of technical solutions for operation and maintenance of urban drainage infrastructures as well as detailed characterisation of the waste streams generated from maintenance operations. Within this project, the postdoc will be involved in collaboration with stakeholders in the water and wastewater industry and will communicate results both with the industry and international researchers through well-established competence network. Duties As a Postdoc you independently plan and carry out your research work. Further tasks include the writing of scientific papers and the participation in Swedish and international conferences. You may also have the opportunity to teach in undergraduate courses and administrative tasks may be included (up to 20% of fulltime). You will have two supervisors who will support you. The research work for this project will specifically include experimental work. Qualifications In order to be eligible for employment as postdoc you must have a PhD or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD in the field of water and environment, natural resources engineering, civil engineering or environmental chemistry.
