PhD position in global change biology At the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences (BioEnv) we have teaching and research activities that stretch from the alpine ecosystem, through forests, cultivated land and streams, all the way into the marine environment. In these environments we study different levels of biological organisation from genes, individuals, and populations, to communities and ecosystems. We work within ecology, evolution, physiology, systematics, and combinations of these fields to understand the impact of natural and anthropogenic changes of the environment. The department is placed at two different localities: in Natrium at Medicinaregatan 7B in Gothenburg and at the Kristineberg marine research station operated by the Marine Infrastructure at the University of Gothenburg. The current employment is based at Natrium, with the possibility to conduct research projects at the marine station. General information about being a doctoral student at the University of Gothenburg can be found on the university's doctoral student pages. https://www.gu.se/en/doctoral-studies We offer The University of Gothenburg is a state authority, which means special benefits, more holidays and a great pension. You can read more about our employment benefits https://www.gu.se/jobba-hos-oss/formaner-och-forsakringar-vid-goteborgs-universitet. Project description Climate change and the increased frequency, intensity, and duration of heatwaves pose growing threats to the persistence of animal biodiversity. A central challenge in global change biology is to understand why species and populations differ in their vulnerability, so that research can inform conservation, management, and policy. However, we still cannot reliably predict how climate change will affect animal populations across their full life cycle. Accumulating evidence suggests that early life stages can be more sensitive to extreme heat than adults, yet developmental stages remain critically understudied. Current methods used to quantify climate vulnerability are also often not directly comparable between embryos and later life stages, which has further limited our ability to identify critical windows of sensitivity to climate change. New methodological advances now allow us to standardise how we compare vulnerability across life stages, opening up exciting opportunities to understand how climate change affects all stages of life. The central question of this PhD project is: How and why does thermal sensitivity vary across the life cycle, and what are the consequences for animal populations under climate change? This fully funded PhD project is part of a research program funded by the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet) on the vulnerability of fish life stages to climate change. The PhD project is expected to combine empirical research with evidence synthesis and comparative analyses. While some projects will primarily focus on fish, comparative studies can be broader in scope, and there will be opportunities to study other taxa (e.g., freshwater and marine invertebrates). The project plan is flexible in its scope, and the PhD student will be encouraged to develop original questions and take increasing intellectual ownership of their research agenda. The applicant is also expected to take part in collaborations at both local and global scales, and contribute to the Thermal Ecology Alliance. Therefore, the PhD student will have excellent opportunities to develop a large collaborative network and address broad questions in global change biology. Duties The principal duty is to undertake doctoral education and complete a doctoral thesis under supervision. This includes developing theoretical understanding, methodological expertise, analytical skills, scientific thinking, and increasing research independence. The PhD student will: Develop research questions and study designs; Conduct laboratory experiments and, where relevant, field sampling or environmental monitoring; Collect, manage, analyse, and interpret data using transparent and reproducible workflows; Conduct evidence synthesis, meta-analysis, comparative analyses, or environmental modelling; Comply with relevant animal-welfare, ethical, data-management, and health-and-safety requirements; Communicate results through the doctoral thesis, scientific publications, seminars, conferences, and other appropriate formats; Participate constructively in departmental and collegial activities Contribute to leading and managing collaborations Periods of fieldwork at Kristineberg marine station or research visits elsewhere in Sweden or abroad may form part of the project. The need, timing, and accessibility of such activities will be discussed and planned with the PhD student. As part of the employment, the PhD student may have departmental duties corresponding to up to 20 % of full-time employment, distributed throughout the study period, and result in a corresponding extension of the studies. Departmental duties usually consist of teaching at first- and second-cycle levels, but may also include research and administration. Departmental duties usually consist of teaching at first- and second-cycle levels, but may also include research and administration. Project description: Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) begin years to decades before symptoms emerge. With the approval of the first anti-amyloid therapies, which are most effective when initiated early, there is an urgent need for biomarkers that can detect, stage and monitor disease in this presymptomatic window. Yet the combined value of available neuroimaging biomarkers for early neurodegeneration remains insufficiently established, and emerging modalities capturing processes upstream of atrophy require validation. This PhD project uses multimodal neuroimaging to decipher early neurodegenerative disease across three complementary modalities and world-leading cohorts. Structural MRI measures of hippocampal volume, cortical thickness, white matter hyperintensities and perfusion will be studied in relation to cerebrospinal fluid and plasma biomarkers and cognition in the population-based REAL AD Validation cohort. Longitudinal tau PET with [18F]RO948 in the ALFA+ cohort of cognitively unimpaired individuals will characterise the temporal relationships between amyloid, tau spreading, neurodegeneration and cognitive change across biomarker-defined disease stages. Finally, synaptic density will be quantified with [18F]SynVesT-1 SV2A PET in the SYNAPSE study, evaluating whether synaptic loss – a strong correlate of cognitive decline – can serve as a marker of neurodegeneration preceding structural atrophy, and whether it is sensitive to cognitive training-induced plasticity. Across modalities, diagnostic and prognostic models will be developed to determine the added value of each technique, alone and combined with fluid and cognitive measures, for early detection, disease staging and prediction of progression. The project is embedded in an international supervisory network spanning Gothenburg, Stockholm, Barcelona and Madison, and will deliver validated imaging tools to support earlier diagnosis, improved trial design and treatment monitoring in AD. Project description: Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease characterised by periods of remission and relapse. Although modern treatment often leads to clinical, endoscopic and histological healing, many patients relapse. Why an apparently healed intestinal mucosa remains biologically vulnerable is a central unanswered question. This PhD project aims to identify the molecular mechanisms that determine whether remission remains stable or the disease relapses. The project is based on the hypothesis that the intestinal microenvironment, shaped by interactions between the microbiota, microbial metabolites and host regulatory signals, is not fully restored during remission, which may increase susceptibility to renewed inflammatory stimuli. The PhD student will be part of BioLabX, Sweden's national research school in Biomedical Laboratory Science. The project is particularly relevant for applicants with a background in Biomedical Laboratory Science. The PhD student will combine patient-oriented research with experimental models to investigate how the intestinal microenvironment influences immune function during remission. The work includes handling and analysis of human patient samples, functional cell models using human macrophages, advanced cell culture, flow cytometry and molecular biology, as well as metabolomics and lipidomics. Bioinformatic and statistical methods will be used to integrate molecular data with clinical follow-up and identify biomarkers that may predict relapse. The research environment is translational and interdisciplinary, with close collaboration between preclinical researchers, clinical gastroenterologists and national research networks. Through BioLabX, the PhD student will have access to a national network, specialised doctoral courses and pedagogical training. Project description: Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men and primarily affects older patients who often have multiple comorbidities and require several medications. Modern androgen receptor pathway inhibitors (ARPIs) have substantially improved survival in advanced prostate cancer. At the same time, many patients receive direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) to prevent stroke and thromboembolic events. ARPIs can alter the activity of drug-metabolizing enzymes and transport proteins, leading to clinically important drug–drug interactions. These interactions may reduce DOAC exposure, increasing the risk of thromboembolic complications, while uncertainty about their clinical impact may also limit the optimal use of effective cancer therapies. Despite increasing mechanistic knowledge, major questions remain regarding which patients are most at risk and how treatment can be individualized to maximize both efficacy and safety. The overall aim of this PhD project is to develop precision dosing strategies for the safe and effective co-administration of ARPIs and DOACs. The project combines laboratory research, clinical studies, and advanced pharmacometric modelling through four integrated work packages: 1. Development and validation of LC–MS/MS methods for quantifying enzalutamide and selected DOACs in human plasma. 2. In vitro studies using human liver microsomes to investigate drug metabolism, interaction mechanisms, and the impact of genetic variation. 3. A prospective clinical pharmacokinetic study including biomarker analyses and clinical follow-up. 4. Population pharmacokinetic modelling to identify risk factors and develop individualized dosing strategies. The successful candidate will receive multidisciplinary training in clinical pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, pharmacogenetics, bioanalysis, pharmacometrics, and precision medicine. The project is supervised by an interdisciplinary team with complementary expertise from academia, clinical practice, and the pharmaceutical industry, providing a unique translational research environment spanning mechanistic laboratory studies, clinical research, and precision medicine.
