Scope: Nuclear-side technical leadership; integration across disciplines; compliance-minded evidence ownership.
What we do at Blykalla Blykalla is a Swedish deep-tech company at the forefront of the nuclear industry, pioneering the development of small modular reactors that provide clean, safe, and reliable energy. Thanks to lead-cooling, we achieve high safety in a very compact format, allowing for a simple and cost-effective design that can be mass-produced. Our unique reactor design will provide safe and green baseload energy that perfectly complements solar and wind power. What you’ll get to do As a Rotating Machine Lead Engineer, you will own the rotating equipment portfolio of the SEALER plant — from the Primary Coolant Pumps (PCPs) submerged in molten lead above 400 °C, where conventional bearing and sealing solutions don't apply, to the secondary-side feedwater and condensate pumps and the full set of auxiliary and safety-related pumps the plant requires. It is a technically demanding portfolio that spans genuinely novel engineering on the primary side and rigorous nuclear-grade discipline throughout: Define functional and design requirements for the full rotating equipment portfolio — PCPs in molten lead, secondary-side feedwater and condensate pumps, and all auxiliary, safety-related, and service pumps. Develop design basis documentation and lead trade-off studies on pump configuration, drive arrangement, sealing strategy, and bearing technology. Set priorities across the portfolio — distinguishing where Blykalla-specific engineering is warranted from where standard industrial solutions suffice. Act as Blykalla's technical counterpart to pump suppliers and engineering partners, challenging design choices and steering solutions to fit plant requirements across hydraulics, sealing, materials, and maintainability. Define the scope of hydraulic, rotordynamic, and structural analyses; brief specialists; and critically review their outputs. Use hand calculations to sanity-check results. Own supplier work packages: evaluate proposals, lead design reviews, and keep pump development aligned with plant requirements and schedule. Support test rig development when needed to advance tailor-made pumping solutions. Collaborate across internal teams and with academic and industrial partners. Who’ll you’ll get to work with The Rotating Machine Lead Engineer sits in the Fluid Systems Engineering Team within Blykalla, and reports to the Manager of Fluids Engineering. We are a diverse team that is passionate about our work and Blykalla. Who you are You will be part of a highly skilled team with a can-do attitude. We value personnel chemistry and strive to create a workplace where you enjoy coming to. There are however a few things that we think will help for you to succeed in this role, these are: More than 5 years of professional experience as a rotating equipment engineer. Degree in mechanical, energy, nuclear, or a closely related discipline. A meaningful portion of your experience at a pump manufacturer or rotating equipment OEM, ideally in a role combining hydraulic and mechanical design with workshop and field interface, or equivalent experience as a discipline lead on the operator or EPC side. Strong working knowledge of centrifugal and/or axial pump design, including rotordynamics, bearing selection, mechanical seals or seal-less concepts, and applicable design codes and standards such as API 610, API 682, ASME III, PED, or RCC-M. Hydraulic and mechanical fundamentals sufficient to steer and critically review calculations performed by specialists, including the ability to perform hand calculations on head, NPSH, power, and basic rotordynamics to sanity-check results. Comfort writing clear technical specifications, reviewing supplier deliverables critically, and managing a multi-vendor technical dialogue from concept through qualification. Familiarity with CAD tools and engineering software. Fluent in English, spoken and written. Fluency in Swedish is a plus. Meritorious skills: Hands-on experience with heavy liquid metal pumps (lead, lead-bismuth, sodium). Experience with reactor coolant pumps in light-water reactors. Experience with high-pressure feedwater or boiler feed pumps in conventional or nuclear steam plants. Familiarity with magnetic drives, canned-motor pumps, or other seal-less concepts. Experience with rotordynamic, CFD, or FEA analyses; the priority is the ability to define, commission, and review such analyses rather than execute them. Prior experience coordinating multidisciplinary design work or managing supplier technical interfaces. If you are not sure that you are 100% qualified but are up to the challenge, we encourage you to apply. Location This position is for our office in Stockholm. So, what do you think? Take the chance to be at the forefront of revolutionizing nuclear power. Join our team as Rotating Machine Lead Engineer and help shape the energy landscape of tomorrow. Blykalla is scaling rapidly to industrialize our next-generation small modular reactor (SMR) technology. If you are passionate about nuclear technology and want to make a real impact on the future of clean energy, we’d love to hear from you. Do you thrive on solving complex chemical and material challenges through hands-on experimentation and analytical thinking? We are looking for a Nuclear Waste Chemist - an experimentalist role to help develop Blykalla’s backend chemistry and waste management strategies for our lead-cooled SMR technology. In this role, you will combine experimental R&D, technical analysis, and cross-functional collaboration to support areas such as waste minimization, coolant purification, material reuse, spent nuclear fuel (SNF) handling and backend system development. This is an opportunity to help build both the technical foundations and laboratory capabilities for one of Europe’s most advanced nuclear startups. What we do at Blykalla Blykalla is developing the next generation of nuclear technology through advanced Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) based on innovative fuel, materials, and reactor designs. As Sweden’s leading SMR developer, our mission is to decarbonize industry and provide safe, scalable, and sustainable energy solutions. Our reactors use uranium nitride fuel and lead coolant, creating unique opportunities and challenges across fuel cycle chemistry, coolant purification, and waste management. What You'll Do You will play a key role in building Blykalla’s experimental capabilities related to backend systems and nuclear waste management. Your responsibilities include: Help establish and develop Blykalla’s in-house chemistry laboratory and experimental capabilities. Design, plan, and perform experiments related to waste treatment, coolant purification, and material handling. Troubleshoot experimental systems, identify suitable analytical methods, and independently drive investigations forward. Contribute to technical reports, feasibility studies, licensing documentation, and strategic decision-making. Investigate opportunities to reduce low-, intermediate-, and high-level waste volumes through purification strategies, system design, and material choices. Analyze and evaluate expected waste streams, both solid and liquid, based on reactor operating conditions and system design. Evaluate treatment, purification, recycling, and waste management methods for Pb coolant, activated materials, and SNF, including contamination control and backend management considerations. Work closely with national laboratories, industrial partners, and regulators to turn research into deployable solutions. Act as an internal technical resource for chemistry-related questions across the waste lifecycle and backend systems. Who You Are You are analytical, hands-on, and motivated by solving difficult technical problems. You enjoy experimental work and are comfortable navigating uncertainty in a fast-moving R&D environment. You are someone who can combine theory with practical execution — designing experiments, troubleshooting equipment and processes, analyzing data, and communicating results clearly. Even when facing unfamiliar systems or analytical methods, you know how to identify the right tools, techniques, and collaborators to move forward. You work well across disciplines, communicate effectively, and enjoy building new capabilities from the ground up. Above all, you want to contribute to meaningful long-term solutions in clean energy and nuclear technology.
