Description Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) is a technology that allows electric vehicles (EVs) to not only draw power from the grid for charging but also feed stored energy back to the grid, supporting energy balance, grid stability, and renewable integration. V2G promises valuable grid services, but the gap between theoretical control concepts and actual hardware performance is not fully explored. The main objective of this thesis is to experimentally evaluate a V2G system under realistic operating conditions. An advanced real-time simulation hardware platform will be employed in this thesis project, serving as both the control system and the digital model of the grid and vehicle-side systems. Such a platform represents an intermediate step between offline simulation and real vehicle operation. Execution Step 1 – Experimental setup * Set up and configure the real-time simulation hardware and software platform. * Operate the system to demonstrate stable bidirectional charging in the lab. * Perform experimental validation to confirm successful commissioning and reliable system operation. Step 2 – Experimental operation * Define and implement selected existing V2G bidirectional charging strategies. * Evaluate the performance of these strategies by analyzing how the system tracks applied charge/discharge power commands (steps, ramps, and realistic profiles). * Quantify system efficiency and losses, including round-trip efficiency, standby losses, and operational stability limits. Expected outcome The thesis will deliver a validated experimental setup along with quantitative evaluation of system capabilities and limitations. We are part of Control & Protection for hardware design. We are designing the automation system layout with placement of circuit boards and cable channeling and more, at our sites. Our cubicles have control cabinet layout, consisting of hundreds of circuit boards for measurements, control and calculations. Our system also includes user interfaces such as HMI (Human Machine Interface), diagnostic tools and IT infrastructure and IT security. Job Scope High-level purpose of function Responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of low-voltage electrical systems and automation components supporting facility and utility equipment. Ensures reliable operation of power distribution, control systems, and automation infrastructure to maintain optimal plant performance and safety standards. Key Responsibilities Key responsibilities include (but are not limited to) Electrical Maintenance & Repair: · Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on low-voltage electrical systems (up to 1,000V), including lighting, power distribution panels, and control circuits. · Diagnose and repair faults in electrical wiring, motors, sensors, and actuators. Automation Systems Support: · Maintain and troubleshoot PLCs, HMIs, and other automation hardware for facility and utility equipment (e.g., HVAC, compressed air systems, water treatment). · Assist in programming and configuration changes under supervision of maintenance engineers or specialists Installation & Commissioning: · Install new electrical and automation components according to technical drawings and safety standards. · Support commissioning of new equipment and ensure compliance with local electrical codes. Safety & Compliance: · Adhere to electrical safety regulations and company standards (e.g., lockout/tagout procedures). · Maintain accurate documentation of electrical and automation work performed. Requirements Educational background and previous experience required for the role Qualifications and Experience · Vocational or technical diploma in Electrical Engineering, Automation Technology, or equivalent. · Minimum 3–5 years’ experience in low-voltage electrical systems and automation in an industrial setting (preferably manufacturing or utilities). Specific skills · Strong knowledge of low-voltage electrical systems, wiring standards, and troubleshooting techniques. · Familiarity with PLCs, HMIs, and industrial communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, Profibus). · Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and automation diagrams. · Competence in using electrical testing instruments (multimeter, insulation tester, etc.).
