The SmartRESs project is part of the Halmstad University ProActS research program, a multidisciplinary research collaboration on sustainability and circularity.   The PhD project is inherently interdisciplinary, uniquely combining innovation science, energy technology, and computer science to study how circular, sustainable, and renewable energy systems can be designed, implemented, and adopted within SMEs. The research project integrates perspectives and methods from all disciplines, and the PhD student is expected to engage in all parts while the exact balance between innovation-oriented and technical work can be adapted to the PhD students background, interests, and competencies. The PhD student will have a supervision team which includes experts from all fields. For the innovation science perspective, the PhD student will map and describe the value creation potential of SmartRESs in SMEs. This includes investigating barriers, drivers, value intentions, and organizational conditions that affect implementation of SmartRESs, and how the system is perceived and adopted by business managers and decision makers. For the perspective of energy technology and computer science, the PhD student will develop a model using data from collaborating SMEs to simulate the potential gains from SmartRESs. Furthermore, the PhD student will explore how the system best can be designed and, at a later stage, design a proof of concept together with project partners. The employment is initially funded for 2 years, making it possible to achieve a Licentiate degree. To pursue a full PhD degree, the candidate and supervisors are obliged to apply for additional external funding. We are looking for a Ph.D. student to conduct ground-breaking research using machine learning methods with the aim of developing a new generation of welding materials. The project is multidisciplinary, and you will work closely together with experts at Chalmers and industry with long and recognized experience of welding science and AI methods. About us The Ph.D. student will be employed at the Division of Energy Technology at the Deptartment of Environmental and Energy Sciences at Chalmers University of Technology. We conduct research and offer education mainly in energy technology and energy systems. Our research focuses on combustion and gasification of biomass, technologies for carbon dioxide avoidance, development of energy materials, and sustainable energy systems. The current project will be carried out in close collaboration with the Division of Chemical Physics at Chalmers, which conducts fundamental research with respect to computational materials using first-principles methods and machine learning approaches. About the research project Welding is, in many ways, the backbone of our society and is prevalent across most industries, including automotive, energy, and manufacturing. LeadIT is a global initiative that brings together member states and companies, co-chaired by the governments of India and Sweden. Its mandate is to advance a just and equitable global industry transition and to align industry with the Paris Agreement. The Secretariat, hosted by SEI, supports its members and the mission of transitioning heavy and energy-intensive industries, including iron and steel – work that is set to expand and deepen. The role This full-time role is central to maintaining momentum in the iron and steel sector: developing industry transition partnerships and supporting cooperation to accelerate industrial decarbonization, in line with LeadIT’s mission. You will define and develop work areas for the green iron and steel sector and contribute to the global industrial decarbonization agenda, working closely with colleagues, partners and industry. The work is multifaceted – spanning industrial co-operation, multilateral development banks, technical research, international institutions, diplomatic missions, industrial policy and national transition plans. Within the LeadIT Secretariat, you will help enable the decarbonization of iron and steel globally, providing countries and companies in emerging markets with assistance through LeadIT members, partners and stakeholders. The visualization and presentation of data-based information to management and operators for decision making in a production environment, is also a very important part of the utilization of this large amount of data.   This vast logged data can provide detailed knowledge of the properties of the rock mass and extracted material and can thus provide engineers and decision makers with important information for safety and productivity optimization.   For this position, mathematical, analytical and problem-solving skills are essential in order to understand and benefit from this new data intensive mining environment.   Duties As a postdoc you will contribute to research, publication and pedagogical activities, and will explore the wide industrial and research contacts of MRE towards future collaborative research projects, both national and international. We offer a stimulating and dynamic research environment with an extensive national and international network along with interesting, exciting research projects conducted in collaboration with the private and public sector.   Qualifications In order to be eligible for a postdoctoral position you must have a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD. Your previous education should contain mining engineering or similar topic that is appropriate for the project description above.   Candidates who have been awarded a doctoral degree no more than three years before the application deadline will be given precedence. Candidates who have been awarded a doctoral degree at an earlier date may also be considered if there are special grounds, for example, different types of statutory leave of absence.   In addition to a PhD in in relevant subject, the following selection criteria will be used:  - Documented knowledge in Mining Engineering and production optimization - Documented mathematical, analytical and problem-solving skills. - Good knowledge of statistics, AI/ML, and mathematical modeling and programming. - Good knowledge in academic writing and reviewing scientific publications. - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. - Practical mining-related experience is a plus. - Interest in and ability to work in a multidisciplinary and multilingual environment. - Good skills in English speaking and writing.
