Visualize your career: How to find hidden jobs with the Geographic Job Map
When searching for job vacancies online, you are almost always met by a long, static text list. You read company names, job titles, and municipality names like "Stockholm", "Gothenburg", or "Malmö".
But municipalities are large areas. A job listed under "Stockholm" could be in Kista (north of the city), in Farsta (south of the city), or right in the city center. Depending on where you live in the region, this could mean the difference between a 15-minute walk and a one-hour commute one way.

The 70% trap: Why we search blindly
Geographic statistics show that over 70% of all job seekers restrict their search to a radius of 15 kilometers from their home, or search solely within their own municipality.
This leads to two major problems:
- Missed opportunities: You miss out on great jobs located just across the municipal border (perhaps only 18 kilometers away as the crow flies) but which actually offer a faster commute than jobs within your own municipality due to proximity to highways or train stations.
- Unnecessary competition: You apply in the same places as everyone else, which increases the competition for the roles.
By using a map instead of a text list, you can immediately spot geographic patterns and discover hidden job hubs you didn't even know existed.
How the Geographic Job Map works on Bytajobb.se
Our job map is not just a static Google Map with pins. It is directly integrated with our real-time database of active jobs and our commuting calculations.
1. Visualize volumes in real time
When you visit /map, you see the whole of Sweden divided into regions and municipalities. The color intensity on the map shows where the job concentration is highest right now. If you click on a municipality, the map zooms in and shows exactly where the workplaces are physically located.
2. Combine with your home address and commute search
You can enter your home address and desired maximum travel time directly on the map. The tool then color-codes all municipalities in the region based on actual travel time (public transit, car, or bicycle) calculated via real-time traffic data:
- 🟢 Green (0–25 minutes): Very short commute, perfect for a smooth everyday life.
- 🔵 Blue (26–50 minutes): Normal commute in the region.
- 🟡 Yellow (51–75 minutes): Longer commute that may still be acceptable.
- 🔴 Red (Over 75 minutes): Long commute.
- 🔘 Greyed out: Municipalities located outside your set maximum travel time.
This makes it easy to find hidden commutes – you immediately see which municipalities are quickest to travel to and can hover over any municipality to see the calculated travel time in minutes!
3. Find hidden job hubs
Many large employers establish themselves in industrial areas or business parks just outside city centers (e.g., Mjärdevi in Linköping, Ideon in Lund, or Kista Science City in Stockholm). The Job Map lets you visually see these clusters of workplaces and easily apply to multiple companies within the same geographic area.
3 smart tips for searching with the Job Map
- Search along the train lines: If you live close to a train station, zoom out on the map and follow the train line. Search for jobs in municipalities located 2–3 stations away. You will often find jobs with significantly lower competition than in the city center, but with the exact same convenient commute.
- Filter by your industry: Combine the map with our category filters. For example, search for "IT & Digital" on the map to see where tech companies are clustered in your region.
- Discover proximity benefits: Look for jobs located near schools, preschools, or grocery stores that you already visit in your daily life. Being able to pick up from preschool and do groceries on the way home saves an immense amount of time and stress.
