9fin’s team of financial journalists is looking for the newest member of the Investment Grade team, a hungry reporter who can hit
the ground running in a fast-moving, opaque and complex financial market. You’ll be expected to have basic market knowledge but
more importantly, be adept at building out your own source base and delivering market-moving insights and scoops. You will be
given full support to develop into the role and learn about this highly specialized market that 9fin covers. Candidates should
have experience and a firm grip on newsgathering, source building, writing, and interviewing skills.

Commercial Due Diligence Engagement Lead / Engagement Director New York About Alpha FMC Founded in London in 2003, Alpha FMC is a leading global consulting firm specializing in the financial services industry. Our 1,500+ consultants work across 19 offices worldwide, combining deep sector expertise with hands-on delivery to support more than 970 clients across asset management, wealth management, insurance, and broader financial services. We are expanding our Commercial Due Diligence (CDD) practice within the Strategy & Deals team and are seeking a senior leader to drive high-profile buy-side and sell-side engagements in New York. This role focuses on market strategy, growth diagnostics, and commercial risk, providing investors and corporate clients with the insight needed to underwrite and defend transaction decisions. Tenure Guidance * Engagement Lead (EL): 7–10 years of relevant experience, with exposure to M&A transactions and team leadership. * Engagement Director (ED): 10+ years of relevant experience, with extensive subject-matter expertise, client ownership, and strategic advisory experience. * Responsibilities are structured to allow candidates to position themselves at the appropriate level based on experience, subject-matter depth, and deal ownership. Key Responsibilities The responsibilities below apply across both levels; Engagement Directors are expected to take greater ownership of client relationships and practice-level contribution, and will have a higher expectation for business development activities. Engagements * Lead Commercial Due Diligence engagements end-to-end, covering market attractiveness, competitive positioning, customer economics, and growth strategy. * Frame and test investor hypotheses on market growth, competitive dynamics, and commercial risk, identifying structural headwinds, customer concentration, and go-to-market constraints that could affect investment value. * Advise clients on growth strategy, market positioning, and commercial risk mitigation, translating findings into actionable commercial and investment insights. * Assess target’s maturity relative to market best practice and peers within Financial Services, FinTech, and related B2B Services (commercial strategy, growth trajectory, customer economics, and competitive positioning). * Partner with Alpha's Technology DD, Operations DD, and Strategy teams to provide integrated perspectives on value creation and risk. Client & Stakeholder Management * Build and maintain senior client relationships, engaging with PE deal teams, portfolio company management teams, and bankers to inform transaction decisions and support value creation. * Take a lead role in shaping client communications, engagement direction, and IC-ready deliverables. * Structure and present conclusions clearly to both commercial and non-technical, IC-level audiences. Team & Practice * Manage and mentor engagement teams, ensuring delivery excellence, fostering analytical rigor, and guiding junior colleagues through complex CDD workstreams. * Contribute to practice growth through thought leadership, business development, and the advancement of Alpha's CDD frameworks and AI-enabled analytics. What We're Looking For * 7+ years of direct, relevant experience in Commercial Due Diligence, growth strategy, and M&A strategic advisory at a senior level (see Tenure Guidance above). * Strong track record leading or materially contributing to buy-side and sell-side CDD engagements within M&A or private equity transactions. * Sector depth in Financial Services, FinTech, Insurance, Wealth/Asset Management, or FS-related B2B Tech/Services. * Strong analytical grounding in market sizing, growth diagnostics, customer economics, and competitive positioning. * Proven ability to translate commercial findings into investment-grade insights and recommendations. * Strong client leadership and stakeholder management skills, capable of engaging senior PE and portfolio-company executives. * Experience managing teams and mentoring high-performing consultants. * MBA preferred (or equivalent advanced degree/experience).
