The European Spallation Source (ESS) will soon be the world’s most powerful source of neutrons, providing researchers with unique opportunities to explore the structure of materials at the atomic level. Neutron scattering at ESS will address critical questions in physics, chemistry, geology, materials science and life science. About the role Within the Science Directorate, the Scientific Support Division provides the ESS neutron science program with experimental support including sample environments, user laboratories, deuteration, and hall coordination in close collaboration with Instrument Divisions. The Sample Environment group at ESS is preparing to support all ESS neutron instruments by developing, assembling and integrating a broad range of specialized equipment for achieving both very low and very high temperatures, high magnetic fields, high pressure, vacuum, gas or liquid flow, lasers, and in many cases, automated systems. Once ESS transitions into operations in early 2027, we will provide operational support for all sample environments on the instruments in close collaboration with scientists, as well as continuing the development of new sample environments. We are now seeking a Sample Environment Engineer to support the development, commissioning and the operations of high temperature furnaces, as well as related gas handling and pressurized gas systems. In this role, you will be responsible for delivering sample environment projects in these areas, working in close collaboration with other members of the Sample environment group as well as academic research groups to develop new equipment and provide operational support for early science experiments at ESS. As part of this role, you will specifically develop new sample environments in collaboration with the universities participating in the ESS Early Science Initiative project “Sustainable and functional materials from local resources” funded by the Swedish Research Council. Day-to-day, you will: Specify, design, develop and procure equipment for high temperature/gas handling and pressurized sample environment systems. Work with academic researchers to develop technical specifications and propose solutions and designs to meet scientific requirements. Assemble, integrate and commission sample environments and associated equipment. Install, operate, maintain and repair high temperature/gas handling/pressurized systems and related equipment. Collaborate with ESS instrument teams and academic user groups to establish specifications and priorities for new high temperature/gas handling/pressurized systems. Provide operational sample environment support for the ESS instruments including on-call support. Provide expert experiment safety reviews for user proposals and carry out safety testing of user-supplied equipment. Collaborate with ESS instrument teams, users, and sample environment groups at other large-scale facilities to further develop high temperature/gas handling/pressurized sample environment equipment and technologies. Participate in the setting-up, maintenance and operation of the sample environment workshops and facilities. This is a full-time, fixed-term position for around 3 years based at ESS Campus in Lund, Sweden. About you You have up to an MSc level degree in an engineering subject (e.g. mechanical, materials or metallurgical engineering) with relevance to this position, which focuses on the development and practical realization of high temperature and pressurized gas handling systems for scientific measurements. Previous experience of design as well as hands-on work experience with high-temperature equipment and gas handling/pressurised gas systems is required. You also have previous experience of mechanical assembly, maintenance and repairs, as well as relevant knowledge of material behavior at high temperatures and hazards involved in pressurized gas systems. Experience of developing scientific or technical equipment involving controlling or monitoring temperature, mass, gas pressure or other experimental parameters would be considered particularly beneficial for this role. Experience with additional techniques including vacuum welding, brazing, wiring, light sheet metal work, and tube bending is also regarded as a merit, as are basic machining skills. Knowledge of control systems and programming would be an advantage, but not a requirement. You are accustomed to working with scientists as well as technicians to define and deliver projects and support operating equipment. You take as much pride in designing engineering solutions to meet scientific requirements as providing hands-on practical solutions to equipment problems, and approach all tasks with a collaborative, service-oriented mind-set. You are eager to learn new things, adapt quickly, and interested in contributing across a variety of tasks besides your core area of competence. A genuine interest in designing as well as building, repairing, or improving experimental equipment is vital. Prior work in a sample environment group or large-scale facility working with high temperature furnaces would be considered a merit, but is not essential. To apply: A career at ESS gives you the opportunity to contribute to the future discoveries within neutron science at a stunning, brand-new workplace filled with innovative minds and brilliant people from across the globe. We offer market competitive, individualised compensation which is differentiated according to role, responsibilities, individual skills, abilities and achievements as well as monthly pension contributions on top of your salary. If you see yourself in what we’re looking for, provide your CV and motivation letter in English by clicking on “apply” and following the instructions. Please be aware that we can only accept direct applications made via the ESS website. The last date for receiving applications is August 14th. We’re a fast-scaling health-tech company backed by top investors and expanding globally. We move fast, stay curious, and believe building something that matters starts with an extraordinary team. If you're passionate about impact and innovation, we'd love to meet you! Please Note: As we enter the summer vacation period, responses to applications will be delayed throughout July. We appreciate your patience while the team takes a well-earned break. We'll be back in full force from August! ABOUT THE ROLE Tandem Health is building technology that helps clinicians work more effectively, safely, and sustainably. As we scale, we want our support experience to be fast, reliable, and increasingly automated. Today, much of our clinician support is handled manually, with trained clinicians and internal teams responding to questions through Intercom. We are looking for a Technical Customer Support Lead to improve this. In this role, you will leverage the latest developments in AI to build a tech-enabled customer support function that is as automated as possible, while still maintaining excellent clinician satisfaction and clear human escalation paths when needed. You will own and improve our support setup in Intercom, creating better triage, automation, documentation, routing, and escalation processes. Your work will help clinicians get faster, higher-quality support, while giving our Engineering and Medical Operations teams more time back. This role is based in Stockholm and requires strong Swedish and English language skills. You will support clinicians in Sweden as well as other markets, including the UK. WHAT YOU WILL DO * Build an AI-enabled first line of support for clinicians, using Intercom and other tools to automate common questions and workflows. * Own and improve our Intercom setup, including inbox structure, workflows, bots, macros, tagging, routing, and reporting. * Create a clear triage and escalation system so support issues are prioritised and routed to the right team. * Identify recurring support themes and turn them into automation, help centre content, playbooks, or product feedback. * Work closely with Product & Engineering and Medical Operations teams to resolve issues and reduce manual support load. * Build and maintain support documentation, internal guides, clinician-facing content, and troubleshooting workflows. * Define when support should be automated, when a human should step in, and when issues should escalate. * Track support performance, including response times, resolution times, automation rate, escalation rate, and clinician satisfaction. WHAT YOU BRING * Experience in technical support, customer operations, support operations, product operations, or a similar role. * Strong interest in AI and automation, with excitement about applying new tools to real operational problems. * Experience working with Intercom or a similar customer support platform. * A technical mindset: you can investigate issues, understand product behaviour, and work effectively with Product and Engineering. * A systems mindset: you do not just want to answer the same question repeatedly; you want to build a better support system. * Strong written and verbal communication skills in Swedish and English. * Good judgement around when to automate, when to involve a human, and when to escalate. * Comfort creating documentation, workflows, playbooks, and support processes from scratch. * A strong customer focus and care for delivering a high-quality clinician experience. BONUS POINTS * Experience building AI-powered or highly automated support workflows. * Experience with Intercom Fin, Zendesk AI, Ada, Decagon, Sierra, ChatGPT-based workflows, or similar tools. * Experience in healthcare, clinical operations, regulated products, or other safety-sensitive environments. * Familiarity with support analytics, product feedback loops, bug reporting, or QA processes. * Experience helping a support function move from manual and reactive to structured, scalable, and automated. BUILD SOMETHING MONUMENTAL FOR HEALTHCARE! At Tandem Health we’re reimagining healthcare by putting clinicians first. Our platform - designed by clinicians, for clinicians - is built on deep insight into real-world pain points, with intuitive medical notes and workflows that truly support patient care. We’re a fast-scaling health-tech company backed by top investors and expanding globally. We move fast, stay curious, and believe building something that matters starts with an extraordinary team. If you're passionate about impact and innovation, we'd love to meet you! ABOUT THE ROLE You're the kind of engineer who gets curious when things don't behave as expected. When audio drops, latency spikes, devices behave inconsistently, or streams become unreliable, you want to understand why. You've spent time building systems where audio and real-time media matter. Maybe you've worked on streaming platforms, communication products, podcasting infrastructure, video conferencing, live broadcasting, or other media-heavy applications. You've seen the challenges that come with real-time systems and know that delivering a seamless experience requires careful engineering across the entire stack. At Tandem Health, you'll help build and scale the audio infrastructure powering millions of healthcare conversations. From device capture and streaming to transcription and AI-powered documentation, you'll work on systems that need to be reliable, low-latency, and production-ready at scale. This is a highly impactful role where you'll work closely with product, AI, and platform teams to ensure that every conversation reaches our systems with the quality and reliability needed to support clinicians across Europe. WHAT YOU WILL DO * Build and improve the systems that power real-time audio streaming throughout our platform. * Work across the full media pipeline, including device capture, buffering, transport, streaming, transcription, monitoring, and quality assurance. * Design and operate reliable, scalable infrastructure capable of handling large volumes of real-time audio data. * Investigate and solve challenging production issues related to latency, connectivity, audio quality, and device compatibility. * Collaborate with engineers across frontend, backend, infrastructure, and AI teams to build seamless end-to-end experiences. * Improve observability, testing, and tooling to ensure our media systems remain stable as we continue to scale. * Help shape technical direction and engineering best practices for real-time media systems at Tandem. WHAT YOU BRING * Experience building and operating production systems involving audio, video, streaming, or other real-time data. * Strong software engineering fundamentals and experience building reliable backend systems. * Familiarity with technologies and protocols commonly used in real-time media systems such as WebRTC, RTP, RTCP, WebSockets, streaming infrastructure, or similar technologies. * Experience troubleshooting performance, latency, reliability, and scalability issues in production environments. * A systems-oriented mindset and a strong desire to understand how things work beneath the surface. * Ability to work across multiple layers of the stack and collaborate effectively with engineers from different disciplines. * Strong communication skills and a pragmatic approach to solving complex technical problems. BONUS POINTS: * Experience working with large-scale audio processing pipelines. * Experience with speech-to-text, transcription, or conversational AI systems. * Experience building products where audio or video is a core part of the user experience. * Experience with frontend development in React and TypeScript. * Experience with C# and Windows-based development. * Experience working in healthcare, regulated environments, or other reliability-critical domains.
