WHAT YOU’LL GET TO DO Blykalla is developing and commercializing lead-cooled Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) to provide safe, reliable, and fossil-free energy. Our mission is to deploy advanced nuclear technology that enables the decarbonization of industry and supports long-term energy security. Reliable and accurate instrumentation is fundamental to the safe operation of any nuclear power plant. As Blykalla develops its lead-cooled SMR technology, we are building an in-house instrumentation capability to define, specify, and integrate the measurement systems that provide the data required for plant control, protection, monitoring, diagnostics, and regulatory compliance. We are seeking a Senior Instrumentation Engineer to lead the specification, integration, and lifecycle management of instrumentation systems for Blykalla's lead-cooled SMR. This role will be responsible for defining instrumentation requirements, ensuring that measurement systems meet the demanding requirements of reactor operation while working closely with automation, control systems, electrical, mechanical, process, and safety engineers. WHO YOU’LL GET TO WORK WITH The Senior Instrumentation Engineer sits in the Plant Engineering Team within Blykalla, and reports to the Plant engineering manager. We are a diverse team that is passionate about our work and Blykalla.  KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Instrumentation System Design * Develop the instrumentation philosophy for Blykalla's reactor and plant systems. * Specify instrumentation for Nuclear Island and supporting plant systems. * Select and specify sensors, transmitters, analyzers, and field devices suitable for nuclear applications. * Develop standard instrumentation specifications and engineering guidelines. * Ensure instrumentation designs are maintainable, reliable, and support plant availability objectives. Measurement System Engineering Develop instrumentation solutions for measurement of temperature, pressure, differential pressure, flow, level, density, vibration, position, speed, radiation (where applicable) and chemistry and process analyzers. Support instrumentation for reactor systems, primary coolant systems, heat transport systems, steam and energy conversion systems, auxiliary systems, HVAC systems, water treatment systems and fuel handling systems. Instrumentation Documentation Develop and maintain instrument data sheets, instrument index, I/O lists, hook-up drawings, instrument location plans, installation specifications, instrument specifications, calibration requirements and inspection and test plans. Support development of P&IDs, functional descriptions, cause-and-effect matrices, instrument loop diagrams and control philosophies. System Integration Work closely with automation, control systems, electrical, mechanical, process, reactor and safety engineers to ensure instrumentation supports plant operation, protection, diagnostics, and maintenance. Define interfaces between field instrumentation and plant DCS, PLC, and protection systems. Vendor & Engineering Partner Management * Develop technical specifications for instrumentation packages. * Evaluate vendor proposals. * Review engineering partner deliverables. * Support procurement activities. * Participate in supplier technical meetings. * Ensure compliance with Blykalla requirements and applicable codes and standards. We're looking for an HSEQ Engineer to own the practical, on-site execution of health, safety, environmental, and quality programmes as test rig activity scales up. As HSEQ Engineer, you will own the day-to-day execution of health, safety, chemical, and quality practice at ARTS, working alongside the Test & Operations team and interfacing with SMR AB and OKG site personnel where activities overlap. We are looking for someone who has practical experience with AI-assisted and agentic coding workflows, or who wants to keep exploring how these tools can help us move faster, improve quality, understand complex codebases, and reduce repetitive work without lowering our engineering standards. Responsibilities 🤘 * Design, build and maintain backend services, APIs and shared frameworks to a high standard. * Evolve and progressively refactor a large, long-lived codebase safely. * Treat non-functional qualities such as reliability, backward compatibility, data integrity, security and performance as high priority. * Collaborate closely with developers, product managers, and other stakeholders, working with domain experts to keep solutions aligned with the business. * Participate in code reviews and uphold shared coding standards. * Write automated integration and component tests. * Help drive technical decisions, reduce technical debt, and document and share knowledge so critical areas aren't held by one person. What are we looking for? 🔎 * Strong experience with Java, SQL, and Spring / Spring Boot. * Solid understanding of Git and CI/CD pipelines. * API design and development (REST / OpenAPI). * As this is central to the role, we want someone who cares about clear, well-versioned, dependable interfaces. * Experienced in evaluating trade-offs between solution design, quality, and timeframes. * Comfort working in large, established codebases. * This includes reading unfamiliar code, understanding existing frameworks, and making careful, incremental changes rather than rewriting from scratch. * Practical experience in Domain-Driven Design, including working with domain experts to build well-aligned, maintainable systems. * A collaborative way of working. This means enjoying being in the office with the team as required, working through pair and mob programming when it helps, communicating openly, and constructively challenging ideas. Important, but not essential: * Microservices experience: Most of our work happens within an established platform and its shared frameworks, so we value the judgement to know when a service boundary is worth drawing more than a long list of microservices built. * AI-assisted development: We care more about a learning mindset and curiosity for using AI tools to work better than about existing skillset. * Cloud platforms: We're progressively moving towards GCP, we experience with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes, Helm) is preferred. * Asynchronous messaging, pub/sub and system integration, and data-exchange patterns. * Observability and monitoring tooling (e.g. Grafana) and Hibernate.
