The opportunity HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) is a product group within Hitachi Energy that develops, manufactures, and sells DC transmission systems on a global market. HVDC technology is used to transmit electricity over long distances and to connect offshore wind farms to the grid. We are looking for two project engineers to join the Harmonic Analysis team within HVDC. We welcome applications from both entry-level and experienced candidates. In this role, you will work with harmonic analysis, power quality, and electrical system studies for HVDC converter stations. You will collaborate across projects and contribute to the successful integration of HVDC stations with electrical networks and offshore wind farms. How you'll make an impact Collaborate in project teams responsible for the electrical system design of HVDC converter stations. Perform harmonic studies below 15 kHz and support compliance measurements during commissioning. Evaluate whether specified harmonic power quality requirements can be fulfilled. Analyze small-signal stability in the harmonic range when connecting an HVDC station to a network or wind farm. Propose active or passive mitigation measures, such as harmonic filters or harmonic dampers, when needed. Calculate harmonic stresses in HVDC station main circuit equipment and assess whether mitigation measures or redesigns are required. Develop tools in Excel, MATLAB, or Python to efficiently analyze and process large amounts of data. Participate in technical discussions and negotiations with colleagues, customers, and suppliers. Present your work and contribute to discussions on challenges and the path forward. Write clear and professional technical reports describing complex study work and results. Participate in conferences and standardization work groups within the international engineering community. Subject description Electric Power Engineering covers studies of sustainable systems for production and transpor-tation of electrical energy, and the interaction between power grid, electricity production, and electricity consumption. Project description The project aims to develop models that describe how HVDC installations affect, and are af-fected by, power quality in electrical networks up to 150 kHz. Measurements will be used to further develop existing models and to distinguish between primary and secondary emissions as well as nonlinear interactions. The results will provide the basis for a generalized model of emission and immunity related to HVDC installations.The study will also investigate network resonances, interactions between multiple HVDC in-stallations, and the effects on transformers and other grid-connected equipment. The project is carried out in collaboration between Luleå University of Technology (LTU) and Hitachi Energy. Duties A PhD position involves both theoretical and practical work. As a doctoral student, you will be trained in scientific research through the publication of journal articles and presentations at national and international conferences. You will also complete both mandatory and elective doctoral courses. In addition, you may have the opportunity to gain teaching experience. As a researcher, you often work as a neutral party in various contexts, providing an excellent opportunity to learn how to manage and contribute to challenging development and research projects. About the role In the Energy Optimization team, we build optimization and ML models that actively control when the heat pump runs, when the battery charges or discharges, and when to export energy to the grid. We are now building new flexibility capabilities by coordinating fleets of homes to support the grid when it matters most. We’re now looking for a Data Scientist to join the team. You’ll lead projects end-to-end: shape the problem, build forecasting and optimization models, run experiments, and work closely with Product, Engineering and Design to ship customer-facing AI solutions. What you will be doing Translate real-world control problems into optimization models that minimizes customers’ energy bills. Develop and improve forecasting and decision-support models enabling optimal control schedules for customers’ home energy devices. Design and run experiments on real customer systems, evaluate impact, and turn insights into product decisions. Work closely with the team to bring models into production. Work across the full data stack, including data pipelines, feature engineering, deployment and monitoring. Lead initiatives from discovery to production impact. You set direction, align with stakeholders across product and engineering to deliver outcomes even when the path is not fully defined. Communicate clearly to technical and non-technical audiences, explaining trade-offs, uncertainty, and what is good enough to ship. What you bring to the team Several years of experience as a Data Scientist, Optimization Engineer, Applied Scientist, Machine Learning Engineer or similar. Strong mathematical and statistical modelling skills. Experience with time-series forecasting and machine learning, ideally applied to operational systems. Experience working in Python and with modern ML/optimization tooling and workflows. Solid Software Engineering fundamentals for deploying and maintaining ML systems in production. A pragmatic, product-oriented mindset: you optimize for real-world impact, not model complexity. Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure). Nice to have Experience with constrained optimization and applying it to real-world systems. Experience with energy systems or electricity market knowledge, especially flexibility and demand response. Experience with control system or physical systems modelling. What is in it for you?
