It is important that the successful applicant is able to contribute to both research and teaching and has the personal qualities (and suitability) required to collaborate internally and externally in order to contribute to the academic development of the department and the subject area. An overall assessment of applicants’ qualifications will be made, taking into account that an assistant professorship is a career-development position intended for relatively recently qualified doctoral researchers and teachers. The purely quantitative extent of an applicant’s achievements will therefore not be decisive. In assessing expertise, consideration will instead be given to the length of time over which the applicant’s overall achievements have been accumulated, as well as to the quality, originality, and impact of their publications. The position will be offered to the applicant who, following an overall assessment of expertise and potential for development, is considered suitable and to have the best ability to perform the duties associated with the position, collaborate with other members of staff, engage with external partners, and contribute to the positive development of the department’s activities. The University of Gothenburg offers a research environment where internationally recognised excellence meets an open and collaborative culture. Here, early-career researchers are given the conditions to grow, build networks, and contribute to research with global relevance. This position is part of the University of Gothenburg’s recruitment initiative Gothenburg Global Scholars. Learn more about the initiative and the University here: Gothenburg Global Scholars. The Faculty of Education is one of the Nordic region’s leading research environments in the fields of teaching, learning, leadership, and health. Through our research, we contribute to a more equitable and sustainable society. By recruiting four new assistant professors, one of whom specialises in subject-matter education, we are strengthening our work on the national initiative Excellence in school, which the University of Gothenburg and Karlstad University have been commissioned to develop. The initiative integrates three research areas—subject-matter education, knowledge assessment and conditions for learning, and school leadership—with the aim of promoting the development of knowledge among all pupils. As an assistant professor, you will be part of the new Centre for Teaching and Learning in Schools, to which a total of eight new assistant professors are being recruited, four of whom will be employed at University of Gothenburg. This position in subject-matter education will be based at the Department of Pedagogical, Curricular, and Professional Studies. Subject area Subject-matter education Subject area description Subject-matter education concerns teaching and learning with a focus on specific content, often related to school subjects, academic disciplines, or professional practice. Subject-matter education research investigates the conditions for, and the relationship between, teaching and learning in one of the following subject areas: social studies, Swedish, mathematics, or science and technology. Duties A position as assistant professor in subject-matter education in one of the specialisations listed above is intended to enable the successful candidate to develop their teaching and research expertise for further academic career progression. The position therefore comprises 50% research and 50% teaching. The research will be conducted in collaboration with senior researchers at the Centre for Teaching and Learning in Schools and will form part of the research programme to be carried out within the strategic research area Excellence in School. At the Department of Pedagogical, Curricular, and Professional Studies, we conduct research, provide education, and engage in collaboration concerning teaching and learning through subject-matter education, practice-oriented research, and critical research. Our research is organised into three research environments: Didactical Classroom Studies; Critical Education Research; and Phenomenography, Variation Theory, and Learning Study. As an assistant professor, you will be affiliated with one of our research environments and one of our divisions for subject-matter education. Read more about the department, and our divisions and research environments here: Department of Pedagogical, Curricular and Professional Studies, University of Gothenburg The department’s teaching mostly takes place within the primary teacher education programme and the secondary teacher education programme, but also includes teaching on other programmes and courses and in continuing professional development. Teaching duties may also include school-based components of teacher education, core courses in educational studies, supervision of students at different levels (first-, second-, and third-cycle), and assessment of degree projects. Course coordination and administration are also included in the duties. Teaching at the department is conducted primarily on campus and in Swedish, although some teaching in English also takes place. Good oral and written proficiency in English and in Swedish or another Scandinavian language is therefore required. Staff are also expected to be present on campus to a significant extent, thereby contributing to a stimulating academic environment. Eligibility Eligibility for appointment as Assistant Professor is governed by the Higher Education Ordinance and the Appointments Procedure for Teachers at the University of Gothenburg. Qualification requirements for employment as an Assistant Professor are fulfilled by someone who has been awarded a doctorate in subject-matter education or another relevant field of doctoral studies, or has the corresponding research competence. Primary consideration should be given to someone who has been awarded a doctorate or achieved the equivalent competence within seven years of the deadline for application for employment as an Assistant Professor. However, someone who has been awarded a doctorate or achieved the equivalent expertise at an earlier date may also be considered if there are special grounds. Special grounds are sick leave, parental leave or other similar circumstances. The reason, dates, and extent of the absence must be clearly specified in the application and supported by documentation/certificates The ability to teach in English and in one or more Scandinavian languages is a requirement. Assessment criteria The assessment criteria for appointment as Assistant Professor are governed by the Higher Education Ordinance and the Appointments Procedure for Teachers at the University of Gothenburg. We are seeking candidates who have demonstrated the ability to independently initiate, develop, and conduct high-quality research within the subject area of the position. International experience from doctoral and/or postdoctoral environments is considered an advantage. Only applicants who meet the eligibility requirements will be assessed. In assessing applicants’ qualifications, most and equal weight will be given to research and teaching experience. Teaching expertise will be assessed as thoroughly as research expertise. The application should therefore place as much emphasis on documenting teaching qualifications as on documenting research qualifications. The assessment will also consider management and administrative expertise, collaboration with wider society, and personal suitability. For the assessment criterion research expertise, the following aspects will be considered: • The quality and originality of research within the subject area of the position in relation to the international research community • Research publication output • Ability to secure external research funding • Ability to develop, lead, and conduct research, both independently and in collaboration with others • Ability to supervise and examine at doctoral level • Being well-established in the research community, through, for example, academic and other expert assignments and participation in networks For the assessment criterion pedagogical expertise, the following aspects will be considered: • Qualifications in teaching and learning in higher education (training and courses) • Breadth and depth of teaching experience within the subject area of the position • Teaching expertise • A teaching qualification or experience of working as an educator • Experience of activities specific to teacher education, such as school-based placement • Experience of supervising degree projects • Progression and development as a teacher • Educational development work, authorship of course literature, and development of teaching materials • Pedagogical leadership and contributions to collegial knowledge development • A rationale for one’s own teaching practice informed by teaching and learning in higher education, and the grounding of that practice in research and established experience-based knowledge. If the applicant does not, at the time of application, have qualifications in teaching and learning in higher education that meet the University of Gothenburg’s requirements (courses PIL101, PIL102 and PIL103), these qualifications must either be validated or the specified courses completed within one year of the start of employment (see Assessment and recognition of qualifications in teaching and learning in higher education | The PIL Unit) For the assessment criterion leadership and administrative expertise, the following aspects will be considered: • Experience of leadership roles or roles in decision-making and preparatory bodies, in relation to education, research, or other aspects of higher education • Formal and informal leadership in knowledge-building environments • Experience of positions of trust within academic activities, nationally or internationally, undertaken independently or on behalf of a higher education institution, relating to research, education, and collaboration • Experience of conducting inquiries and preparing reports on specific issues For the assessment criterion collaboration with wider society, the following aspects, among others, will be considered: • Communication about education, research, and development work in various forms • Contributions to public education and the public communication of research • Initiation and implementation of collaborative projects with external partners • Relevant experience of, and insight into, the activities of key external partners • Substantial contributions to commissioned education and commissioned research For the assessment criterion personal suitability, consideration will be given to sound judgement in professional matters, the ability to perform the duties associated with the position, and the ability to collaborate with others and contribute to the development of the department’s activities. In the appointment of a member of teaching staff, the applicant who, following an overall assessment of expertise and potential for development, is considered to have the best ability to perform the duties associated with the position shall be selected. The Artistic Faculty consists of the departments HDK-Valand – Academy of Art and Design and Academy of Music and Drama. As a combined faculty of art and learning, we are an independent, visionary and critical force in the necessary work to create a more sustainable and open society. HDK-Valand is now looking for an Assistant Professor in Design, specialised in Business and Design, who will conduct research and teaching at the intersection between design studies and business studies. You will be part of the Design unit, attached to the Business and Design Lab (BDL). The Business and Design Lab (BDL) is a research centre that since 2010 builds on a collaboration between HDK-Valand and the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg. Pioneering the intersection between design studies and management and organization studies, BDL offers an inter- and transdisciplinary platform for a critical and grounded investigation of the relations between design & art, technology and the economy. Located between two faculties, the centre has developed a symmetrical dialogue between the two domains of scholarship to study both the role of design and art in organizations and the ways in which design and art work are organized and valued. With a particular interest for methodological developments based on design and artistic methods, the centre has led a large range of research projects nationally and internationally and is seeking to consolidate its next phase of development. The centre involves junior and senior researchers and is led by Elena Raviola, who holds the Torsten and Wanja Söderberg Professorship in Design Management. HDK-Valand’s research environment values a broad and inclusive approach whereby knowledge is produced within established research formats, experimental artistic practices and education. Our research contributes to discourses on environmental, societal and cultural challenges through engagement in interdisciplinary projects. Four research themes oriented around politics, the environment, economics and materiality operate as focus areas to facilitate collaboration between different subjects and actors, and to provide a broad base for both research and teaching. An overarching objective at HDK-Valand is the development of a complete academic environment grounded in these themes More about HDK-Valand here: https://www.gu.se/en/hdk-valand More about BDL here: https://www.gu.se/en/bdl Subject area Design, specialised in Business and Design Subject area description The subject area of this position is Design specialised in Business and Design as the interdisciplinary intersection of design research and management and organization studies. At this intersection between designing and organizing, research investigates design as an organizational, managerial and societal practice as well as organizations, organizing processes and other forms of economic activities as objects of design themselves. A particular area of focus is how the design of material artefacts, such as physical tools, digital technologies, and spatial architecture, is shaped by and shapes organizations and markets in different ways, including issues related to professional work, judgment, learning, leadership, accounting, innovation, strategy formulation, and other organizational phenomena, and ultimately how design contributes to the creation and transformation of organizations, markets, institutions and societal futures. It is central to the subject area of Business and Design at HDK-Valand to engage with design and artistic methodologies, such as participatory design, collaborative design, speculative design, prototyping, games, and related approaches, and to contribute to the development of innovative methodological approaches for creating new forms of engagement with researchers, practitioners, and the wider public around shared societal challenges. Research within the area may include research on the cultural sector, but may also address other sectors and phenomena depending on the candidate’s research interests. Particular priority will be given to research that, at the intersection of these fields, contributes to understand how democracy and the democratic public sphere are being reshaped through design-based and artistic methods. Duties The candidate will conduct research and teaching, with approximately 50% of the position devoted to research and 50% to teaching. Research responsibilities include to: • develop and carry out interdisciplinary research projects in collaboration with other researchers nationally and internationally; • publish articles and other scholarly texts in international journals and with international publishers; • conduct assigned research tasks under the supervision of Prof. Elena Raviola and contribute to the national and international strategic and operational development of the Business and Design Lab, including the organization of seminar series and other meetings, the development of collaborations with local actors, and participation in larger research bid; • apply for own research projects to Swedish, Nordic and European funders; • participate in existing research projects by conducting research work and assisting with project management and coordination; • engage with societal partners and cultural institutions in research collaborations; • develop and communicate research findings in public facing activities. Teaching will take place at the undergraduate, master and doctoral levels in relevant courses and programs in design and other teaching areas of the Academy and will include to: • develop existing and new courses; • lead course coordination and administration; • supervise student projects and theses; • teach in classroom and digital formats. Responsibilities and tasks may change over time. Eligibility Eligibility for appointment as Assistant Professor is governed by the Higher Education Ordinance and the Appointments Procedure for Teachers at the University of Gothenburg.
