Department of Forest Bioeconomy and Technology We are seeking an engaged and motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to join an interdisciplinary research collaboration between the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Umeå University, and the University of Massachusetts. As Sweden and the EU work towards ambitious biodiversity and ecosystem restoration goals, understanding the human dimensions of forest management is increasingly important. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to research at the intersection of psychology, economics, and forestry, helping to inform decisions towards more resilient forest landscapes. The complete advertisement is available at: https://www.slu.se/en/about-slu/work-at-slu/jobs-and-vacancies/ About the position The EU Nature Restoration Law and Sweden’s environmental quality goals stipulate societal demands for more biodiverse landscapes. In Sweden, some 300,000 individuals and families own about 50% of the forestland that spans across two-thirds of the country. These family forest owners will need to undertake the preponderance of actions for creating more biodiverse forests in Sweden. In an interdisciplinary project funded by the Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation, we pose three specific research questions: What salient elements in cognitive models represent family forest owners’ perceptions and judgement strategies about forest biodiversity on their ownerships? Do family forest owners have the capability, opportunity and motivation to change towards biodiversity-enhancing forest management behaviors? Can interventions providing financial compensation encourage family forest owners’ change toward adopting biodiversity-enhancing forest management behaviors? To help answer these questions, we seek to recruit a postdoctoral researcher to join researchers in applied economics, psychology, and forestry. The candidate will support the integration of behavioral science principles and natural resource management knowledge into relevant research designs; developing research questions; applying appropriate analytical methods; and writing scientific manuscripts. This is a two-year full-time post. A specific task is the development of protocols to engage in interviews with family forest owners, support data collection, and lead analyses. The workplace is the SLU campus in Umeå. Your profile An eligible candidate should hold a Ph.D. obtained within the last three years in a relevant field (e.g. applied economics, cognitive sciences, psychology), or a strong interdisciplinary program. In exceptional circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. Exceptional circumstances include leave of absence due to illness, parental leave, positions of trust within trade unions, service in the armed forces, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or service/assignments relevant to the subject area. Applicants are expected to demonstrate excellent communication skills in English, both written and spoken, and a clear motivation to pursue an academic career. The ability to work independently, show initiative, and collaborate effectively in interdisciplinary and international research environments is essential. Additional merits include demonstrated ability to integrate behavioral concepts into decision-making research, experience in writing scientific manuscripts, and advanced, documented proficiency in R, Stata, or similar analytical software used for modeling. Further advantages include working knowledge of Swedish and experience in conducting surveys and/or interviews as data collection methods. About us The Department of Forest Bioeconomy and Technology at SLU brings together broad expertise in engineering, natural sciences and social sciences. By integrating interdisciplinary perspectives, we conduct research spanning the entire forest value chain, and explore how raw materials, materials, processes, and systems can be developed to contribute to the sustainable development of forest resources and a circular bioeconomy. Södertörn University welcomes doctoral proposals in History, to be conducted within the research project: “Money(-)making empire. Monetary policies and practices in the Swedish Baltic Empire, ca. 1600–1800”. Visit the project website for more information https://moneymakingempire.se/. The project “Money(-)making Empire” examines monetary evolution in the Baltic Sea region within the broader context of early modern Northern Europe, using the Swedish Empire as a case study. Conceptualising the empire as a polycentric polity, the project challenges nation-state–centred historiography and instead analyses money as a transregional lens through which flows of power, conflict, and integration can be traced across imperial spaces. Monetary policy was central to both warfare and empire-building and its effects extended far beyond Sweden proper, influencing peasants, soldiers, merchants, urban authorities, and foreign rulers across the Baltic Sea Region. For more information, please https://ostersjostiftelsen.se/project/money-making-empire-monetary-policies-and-practices-in-the-swedish-baltic-empire-ca-1600-1800/. History at Södertörn University is a dynamic environment for historical research and education, with researchers who specialise in a variety of time periods and societal or cultural processes. Sweden, the Nordics, and the Baltic Sea region and Eastern Europe are the main geographical areas of expertise. For more information, please https://www.sh.se/english/sodertorn-university/research/subjects/history. For a Swedish version https://www.sh.se/institutioner--amnen/institutionen-for-historia-och-samtidsstudier/historia The Department of History is part of the Historical Studies research area at Södertörn University, an area of the humanities in which aspects of society, culture and heritage are studied from different perspectives. For more information, please https://www.sh.se/english/sodertorn-university/research/doctoral-level-education/historical-studies. For a Swedish version https://www.sh.se/forskning/forskarutbildning/forskarutbildningsomraden/historiska-studier. Description of the doctoral position The successful applicants will complete their doctoral theses as part of the project and within its thematic and theoretical framework. These doctoral projects may adopt a range of perspectives, such as analyses of monetary practices and discourses among and/or between different social groups (such as the nobility, merchants, peasants, and burghers), as well as political and administrative discourses, policies, and practices at the imperial, national, and/or local levels. We therefore welcome applications that encompass the full spectrum of approaches, from macro- to micro-level studies of social and cultural relations and practices, provided that they align with the project’s aims. The project advances three interrelated analytical perspectives. First, it emphasises the polycentric nature of the Swedish Empire, integrating its Baltic and German provinces into a single framework and showing how power was negotiated through multiple institutional and social centres. Second, it treats money not merely as an economic instrument but as a practical and socially embedded problem, foregrounding everyday monetary practices, coin shortages, and alternative means of exchange among ordinary people. Third, it focuses on circulation, examining how money, knowledge, and practices moved across regions and how popular reactions – petitions, protests and riots – both responded to and constrained state policy. Methodologically, the project combines quantitative analysis with qualitative readings. Beyond its historical contribution, the project offers comparative insights into early modern composite states and provides a historically grounded perspective on contemporary monetary integration and tension in the Baltic Sea region and Europe more broadly. The work environment at Södertörn University, as well as within the research project, is bilingual, with both Swedish and English as working languages. Entry requirements The general entry requirements are: 1. a second-cycle qualification, or 2. fulfilled requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or 3. substantially equivalent knowledge acquired in some other way in Sweden or abroad. The Faculty Board may permit an exemption from the general entry requirements for an individual applicant, if there are special grounds. (Ordinance 2010:1064) Specific entry requirements The specific entry requirements are met by someone who has at least 90 credits in History, Economic History, the History of Ideas or the equivalent and who has authored an independent dissertation in History worth at least 15 credits at Master’s level. Prerequisites for undertaking the degree programme are the ability to assimilate scientific work in English and command of the language necessary for work on the thesis. Eligible applicants will first be ranked according to their ability to assimilate education at research level, then other qualifications will be reviewed on the basis of this ranking. The applicant’s communication and cooperation skills may also be assessed using references and interviews Admission and employment This position includes admission to third-cycle education, i.e. research level, and employment on a doctoral studentship at the School of Historical and Contemporary Studies at Södertörn University. The intended outcome for admitted students is a PhD. The programme covers 240 credits, which is the equivalent of four years of full-time study. The position may be extended by a maximum of one year due to the inclusion of departmental duties, i.e. education, research and/or administration (equivalent to no more than 20% of full-time). Other grounds for extension could be leave of absence because of illness or for service in the defence forces, an elected position in a trade union/student organisation, or parental leave. For the full version of the advertisement, see Environmentally safe maintenance operations of urban drainage infrastructures Do you want to develop your research and teaching in an environment where collaboration with industry and society is a natural part of the work? With us, you will collaborate with dedicated colleagues, have access to modern research infrastructure, and enjoy strong opportunities to attract external funding. You will have the space to make a real difference for your students, your research, and society at large. The Urban Water Engineering research group seeks a driven and committed postdoc with a focus on how sustainable management of stormwater sediments can contribute to improved water quality. Take the opportunity to join one of the leading stormwater research groups in the world with an international, creative and dynamic environment and close cooperation with the industry and universities worldwide. The group consists of about 50 members including senior researchers, Swedish and international adjunct professors and about 20 doctoral students. The group has an extensive national and international collaboration network. Subject description Urban Water Engineering encompasses the entire urban water system (storm drains, drinking water supply and wastewater) with respect to collection, transport and treatment, as well as organisation and planning. The research aims to encourage a strong economy, clean environment and the wise use of resources, while preserving the public’s health and safety. Project description Stormwater carries a variety of pollutants from urban environments, posing major challenges for the protection of surface waters. Urban drainage infrastructures such as gully pots and stormwater ponds are critical to mitigate these challenges. Over time, the accumulation of sediments and associated contaminants in these infrastructures lead to an impaired performance and thus requiring routine and environmentally safe maintenance operations. As the use of urban drainage infrastructures expands, the mass of sediments and associated contaminants retained in such infrastructure will continue to grow, amplifying both management challenges and potential environmental risks. Fully characterising these challenges within a wider technical and socio-economic context is essential to ensure that the accumulation of sediments prevents–rather than simply defers– their discharge to coastal environments. Addressing this need is the central aim of this project, responding directly to the needs of municipalities, authorities and practitioners for evidence-based tools, clear governance and legal guidance, environmentally responsible maintenance methods and sustainable financial models, and contributes to reducing land-based pressures on coastal and marine environments through system-level transformation. The work within the project includes the evaluation and development of technical solutions for operation and maintenance of urban drainage infrastructures as well as detailed characterisation of the waste streams generated from maintenance operations. Within this project, the postdoc will be involved in collaboration with stakeholders in the water and wastewater industry and will communicate results both with the industry and international researchers through well-established competence network. Duties As a Postdoc you independently plan and carry out your research work. Further tasks include the writing of scientific papers and the participation in Swedish and international conferences. You may also have the opportunity to teach in undergraduate courses and administrative tasks may be included (up to 20% of fulltime). You will have two supervisors who will support you. The research work for this project will specifically include experimental work. Qualifications In order to be eligible for employment as postdoc you must have a PhD or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD in the field of water and environment, natural resources engineering, civil engineering or environmental chemistry. A doctoral degree awarded no more than three years before the application deadline provides a useful qualification. Candidates who have been awarded a doctoral degree at an earlier date may also be considered if there are special grounds, for example, different types of statutory leave of absence. The applicant should have the ability to work independently and take own initiative as well as being able to independently address new research areas. Good oral and written skills in English are essential to facilitate presentation of research outcomes in international conferences and scientific papers. It is advantageous if you have knowledge and experience of: - stormwater management, urban pollution sources and environmental behaviour of pollutants - experience of sampling, analytical chemistry, laboratory work and statistics as well as working with large environmental measurement data sets Swedish/Scandinavian language skills are beneficial, as they will facilitate communication with stakeholders and participation in teaching activities. Having a driver’s license is meritorious, as it will facilitate research work. Applicants should provide contact details to minimum two reference persons upon request.
